These works already exist in my subconscious…I just have to bring them to life.

FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM (kiths and kins)

These black and white paintings are pieces inspired by photos from my dad’s archives, consisting of faces I do and do not recognise. The choice of images was based on the poses, and the fashion sense, but most importantly, the faces. The grotesque impasto faces gives each character a unique identity (depicting raw emotions) where beauty and identity is redefined. This collection delves into the idea of the past influencing the present.

The painting process explains how one grows through life, dealing with both positive and negative moments. It is also about bringing the viewer closer to humanity and spirituality as entities or ideas. They’re all not portraits because they deny the viewers of the gaze, and have no shadows (but can literally be treated as portraits). This idea creates a distance between the viewer and the work, (more also, the distance between the bodies and souls of individuals when dealing with spirituality).

The paintings are depictions and deconstructions of the human essence in all its forms. It is about the human body, the psyche, mark making, and the anatomy, all together in harmony. The background reminds the character of what he/she once was before he/she became whatever…(your struggles build you different, the scars remind you of how far you’ve come). Also, keeping photographs of friends and family reminds us of the role those souls played in our lives.

The face being the map of the soul — symbolizes the tension between appearance and essence.

Title: WHEN TIME WAS DRESSED

#transfigurative #contemporaryart #portrait #mixedmedia

The face dissolves under the weight of existence itself.
Remove the mask, and meet a whole different person.

The hands become records of consequence.

While the face carries what has been inherited, the hands carry what has been enacted.

Ancestry.

Spirit.

Memory.

Desire.

Loss.

Love.

Time.

The self is never singular.

The self is layered.

The self is inherited.

The self is becoming. by @w.atsem
