Into the Light: Georgetown Edition 🇲🇾📸
Recipe ➡️➡️➡️

I've owned a Fujifilm for the best part of 5 years. Only 5 months ago I started experimenting with Fuji recipes and SOOC images and the process has made me feek like I've discovered my love for photography all over again (not that I ever lost it!) 🤘🏻

For a long time, shooting directly into the light felt like a big no-no! But with a nice recipe, and the addition of a black diffusion filter to my setup I've been loving the results SOOC 😍👌🏻

It's also nice to share some images I've actually taken recently 😅. After being off IG for over a year, I've somewhat of a backlog!

What do you think?

Thanks to mass tourism and an epidemic of party hostels, life on the Phi Phi Islands isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea these days. BUT, there's one thing you simply cannot deny...it's still freakin' stunning! 😍

In the streets of: Colombo 🇱🇰

January 30th 2024, my first taste of Asia (if you exclude Turkey when I was 13 😅). We'd touched down the evening before, so after bit of rest, we made a beeline for the centre of Colombo...It was such a mindblowing moment for me 🤯 I'd never experienced anything like it. The heat, the intensity, the smell, the busyness, the music, the dust, the colours...it was overhwhelming and awe-inspiring! I felt so out of place, but the smiles and shouts from people who just wanted to greet us, say hello, ask where we're from and have a photo taken quickly made me feel at ease!

I've never actually posted all these photos together in one place, looking back through them makes me feel like I'm standing in those streets again. I don't think I'm done with Sri Lanka.

Favourites from Vietnam: Part II 🇻🇳

Did you know: The yellow colour of the star on the Vietnamese flag represents the yellow colour of the Viet peoples skin?!

Ok, I was told this by Vietnamese guide during a walking tour in Hanoi. I had to kind of double take it when I heard that, because where I'm from, if you refer to Vietnamese people as "yellow", you'd probably be called a racist! 😅

I'm keen to know if it's actually true, or whether it's something that's told to amuse tourists?! 🤔🤣

I've looked it up and found it loosely referenced in a couple of pieces, although most articles discuss how the five points of the star symbolise the five groups in society: farmers, workers, intellectuals, youth, and soldiers.

If anyone knows for sure, let me know! 👍🏻😁

Anyway, here's a few more of by best from Vietnam. Enjoy! 🇻🇳

May–June 2024. That's when I took these photos. for all that time they've been collecting digital dust...BUT, over the last few weeks I've been determined to sift through tens-of-thousands of images in Lightroom and on hard drives, and FINALLY attempt to get my photography house in order! There's still some way to go, but I'm happy to finally share the first installment of my favourite images from Vietnam.

A word on Vietnam 🇻🇳 ...Mind-blowing! For me, it's a place I like to describe as a true travel experience. From the most insane landscapes and epic drives, to vibrant, chaotic and intense cities. Of course there's an honourable mention for the food too! 😋🤭 It's a country that challenged me. I experienced and saw things that made me feel uncomfortable, most of which was routed in how animals are treated. From chickens in tiny cages left on hot tarmac, horses (used for rides) collapsing in the sun without shade or water, caged birds, caged exotic animals, dog meat (I never knowingly ate any), Horseshoe crabs in tanks at restaurants (a supposedly protected species) & children being forced to perform for money. The relentless nature of the taxi drivers constantly shouting at you for a ride, irritated me. Having to say no dozens of times, irritated me. 10-hour night buses with one toilet break, irritated me. Being pestered by Hmong ladies for more than 20 minutes in Sapa, who wouldn't take no for an answer, irritated me...

But you know what, I'd go back tomorrow. For me, that's what travel is about, it's not always sunshine and rainbows. It's through the challenges and difficult moments that you grow the most, learn more about the world, and about yourself.

From the ancient temples of Angkor Wat to the floating villages of Tonlé Sap, Cambodia may have just been my greatest adventure yet! 🇰🇭

I skipped the tours and did things my own way on a scooter...that was the best decision I made! With the help of some local knowledge, I was able to explore Ta Phrom (Tomb Raider Temple) completely on my own before the crowds arrived!

The 50 minute ride to Kampong Phluk floating village was an adventure in itself, with miles and miles of dirt tracks through remote villages, and alongside the completely dried up bed of the Tahas river.

During the wet season, Tonlé Sap becomes the largest freshwater lake in southeast Asia. Seeing it during the height of the dry season was quite astonishing, revealing the full extent of the unique stilted houses that would usually be completely submerged! The water levels sink to as low 1-2 metres during the dry season, and rise up to 9 metres during the wet season, when it becomes one of the most productive inland fisheries in the world, with an annual catch of around 400,000 tonnes! 🎣🤯

We IGNORED what every single Thailand travel blog tells you NOT to do...

...drive the Mae Hong Son Loop during burning season 🔥

Turns out it's pretty good advice, and I wouldn't recommend it...except for one tiny village tooked away right on the Northwestern border with Myanmar...

Welcome to Ban Rak Thai 🇹🇭

Air pollution, as a result of agricultural burning and wild fires gets pretty dire during burning season in the Chiang Mai province, in fact, it has ranked #1 as the most polluted region in the world on more than one occasion during the burning season (Late Jan - March).

The haze, as result of the surrounding fires, created such a dramatic, hazy effect that made this picturesque town a dream to photograph 📸 Overall, I wouldn't recommend travelling to this area of Thailand during the burning season, although it did help me produce some of my favourite ever photos you see in this set!

In case you're interested, there are many reasons farmers burn land, such as:

• Lowest-cost land clearing method - requires no fuel and minimal labour
• Fast field preparation - clears crop residue in hours, allowing quick replanting
• Traditional land-management practice - long used for farming and forest use in the region
• Short-term nutrient release - ash adds potassium and other minerals to the soil
• Temporary pest and weed control - reduces insects, seeds, and plant diseases
• Stimulates certain forest foods - encourages growth of mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and edible plants
• Reduces undergrowth in some areas -can lower fuel buildup locally (when controlled)
• Supports livelihoods - enables small farmers and foragers to maintain income with limited resources

Of course, in the modern day, these practises come at huge health & environmental cost far beyond the local area.
