Check out Miles Dykeman’s 2024-25 #bhl deer contest entry.
First off, huge congrats on a STUD buck, Miles. That thing is such a good looking deer!

Second thing to note…. Miles killed this on a 5 acre permission piece. 5, cinco, high….FIVE!
He put in the hard work, hunted strategic, and kills a stud.

Bottom line is if you’re serious about getting it done, you’ll figure out a way. Everyone else will just complain or throw out the casual “must be nice.”

11.8.15 - My first Pope & Young. Having my dad walk up on this guy with me, is what really lit the 🔥 and started my focus on better deer.

I’ve noticed something after listening to these podcasts, questions at seminars, deer expos, roadshows, etc. People really want a magic pill to kill big mature whitetails. Scents, camo, ozone, Broadheads, thermals, bedding, food, moon phase etc. These are all tools and strategies, and not one, by itself is going to kill him. Some of them you may not even believe in or exercise yourself, and that’s fine. I’m not saying I believe in them or not, or that this is a mature buck for that matter.

After it’s all said and done, and rubber has met the road, the ground you’re hunting HAS to have that caliber of deer, in order for you to reach that goal. Just because you follow the moon, or use a certain scent and camo, does not mean a 5.5+ is going to give you a shot. Have goals, but be realistic with yourself and what that ground holds. Don’t let social media or inches dictate what you should be happy with.

We live in a world where we can hit a button and someone drops a package off at our door that same day. We’ve sped everything up and created these false expectations and short-lived gratification. I think that’s why I like this sport so much. It humbles you and keeps you in check. It keeps life rooted for me. It reminds me of times, not long ago that were much slower, more simple, and more enjoyable. I thank God he made me a bowhunter.
