First week as an apprentice at @walstedts has been spent classifying Swedish wool. A little more than 2,5 tonnes of wool has been classified within the project Swedish Wool Initiative. Parts of this we will spin into yarn at Wålstedts the coming months, then woven into fabric like traditional vadmal and twill. by @w_lantz

Complexity of natural sourced materials - Wool:

Wool is generally seen as a great material, with a natural temperature regulation, keeping and building warmth whilst wet and being fairly strong. Compared to synthetic alternatives it might be seen as superior.

But when talking about wool we soon run into some problems. Animal welfare is, and have been, a large topic addressing issues of mulesing and handling in general. Sheep are ruminants, known for contributing to more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, compared to non-ruminants. Handling livestock in general is connected to various emissions.

There is a complexity in this that isn’t always talked about. Farmers contribute to other values in our environment that are harder to calculate on in comparison to CO2 emissions. This is especially true in a Swedish context. Free grazing animals contribute to a higher bio-diversity, it affects the society by enabling a striving countryside with more job opportunities, and in Sweden the wool is in many cases a by-product from the meat industry. Of course, when making calculations, the meat and wool should share the impact and emissions but in general this means a fairly low emission for Swedish wool.

At the same time the plastic alternatives derived from raw oil will contributing to funding for oil producing countries, possibly leading to more emissions than the sheep will ever create. by @w_lantz

A part of my job at Klättermusen is testing new and old materials. When updating fabrics or trims we want to make sure that we use materials that meet our standards. Here we are lab testing some trims when we investigated an upgrade some time ago.

I'm trying to actually start to use this instagram again, so I will begin with telling you a bit about myself.
I am William, a designer, hobby craftsman and outdoor enthusiast.
2022 I graduated from @umeainstituteofdesign and am currently working as material designer at the Swedish outdoor brand @klattermusen.

In my work I am exploring new materials with a great focus on finish, feel, performance and sustainability. All the materials I am working with, whether it is for fabrics or trims, I am carefully considering the properties from a usage and performance point of view, as well as raw material origin and processing and End of Life potentials.

The textile supply chain is complex, and it is not easy to always see the whole picture.

Here I will try to tell and show you about parts of my work, knowledge I gain, personal craft projects and some outdoor life. by @w_lantz
