Stepping into my Jessica Rabbit area? Nah, just waacking and punking ❤️ Yesterdays performance at @kikisburlyq.

I truly love the Burlesque scene, especially since their dancestyle’s movements and political background is in many ways similar to punking (but yet very different).

Punking - Born in the gay black/hispanic disco scene in the 70s. Highly inspired by old 30s/40s/50s Hollywood movie stars and 70s cartoons, superhero’s, martial arts, ballets, gymnasts, Bruce Lee, Japanese folk dance and even Mexican cowboys. Posing and whacking the hands together with the groove was a way to liberate their oppressed sexuality. For 20 years Punking and Whacking disappeared from the dance scene due to to AIDS epidemic (the so called «gay cancer» that killed almost 1 million people in the US, mostly homosexual men). Waacking (punking) was reborn in the early 2000s and most of the style has survived through female dancers who find it to be just as liberating as their creators intention. A way to freely express yourself, strong, powerful, or/and elegant and playful.

A huge shout out to the woman behind these cabaret nights! I am a big fan of Norways Butlesque queen @xkikicherie ❤️ The work she does to build the burlesque dance scene in Oslo is admirable, and her performance art and skills is beyond magnificent! A feminine magnet with grace and elegance!

It was also so nice to hang out and meet people from burlesque and drag scene. Dancers and drag queens with such a unique entertainment X factor (and great fun to join the backstage with). I recommend to check their profiles and see them perform
