is now a gardener with the National Park Service, taking care of the Poplar Grove National Cemetery at the Petersburg Military Battlefield in Virginia!

Historic context: For 9 1/2 months between 1864-65, the Union Army besieged the Confederate Army outside Richmond and Petersburg. When the Union Army liberated the city in April 1865 it led to the collapse of the Confederacy. The siege gave birth to modern trench warfare tactics later used on a much wider scale in World War I.

I’ve accepted a 6 month job working at the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Historic Monument in Jackson, MS, where I’ll be helping restore the house and maintain a community garden!

Medgar Evers (1925-1963) was a prominent NAACP member and civil rights advocate from Mississippi who was assassinated in front of his home on June 12, 1963 for daring to challenge segregation. His death and the national public attention it garnered galvanized support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

So...I have some news...

For all the bad things this pandemic has done; it’s given me time to think, and made me realize that I’d like to be closer to my family when I finally go back to college in person.

I’d thus like to introduce myself as one of the newest members of Davidson College!

I’m going to miss Knox, and will miss even more the friends I have made there. I regret immensely that I never got a chance to say goodbye in person to everyone there who I wanted to because of COVID.

To all my Knox friends: know that while this may be the end of my time at Knox, it’s not the end of our friendship. Send me a DM whenever you want - I’ll always make time to catch up with you!

As for everyone from Davidson; well, let’s just say I’m very excited to be here! I can’t wait to see the campus and meet everyone!

So I didn’t know about this until today; because I was away at college when it happened and I’ve really kinda been off social media for a long time; but one of my friends- Rebekah Harpool- was hit by a car in January and died. We weren’t the absolute *best* of friends, but I still feel like I’ve been hit by a train. Rebekah and I were in choir and biology together and worked on the newspaper and yearbook staff - the two rooms are right next to each other and we’d often run into each other at lunch when people came over to the yearbook room. She was always the sort of person who told it like it was but could put a smile on your face while doing it - and she was a talented singer. She even put up with me and my horrible jokes; which makes her a saint in my book. Rest In Peace, Rebekah. You will be missed. by @wacrawford6
