Mark “Big Wally” Wolling, The Cirque, 1980s “The Arc of Skiing Jackson Hole, 45 years behind the lens.” “On trail crew duty early one morning we discovered a one-lane track packed out by a snow groomer who had driven a short way straight up the Cirque. We’d never seen that done before and it intrigued us. The ski patrol bet us a keg of beer that we couldn’t ski 60 mph on the short, narrow track. We accepted and the next day the race was on. I foreran and the speed gun clocked me at 59 mph. All the other trail crew speed skiers went faster, Joe Larrow winning in a tuck that shot him along at a scorching 67 mph. Porter Fox, 1990s, film. “The Arc of Skiing Jackson Hole, 45 years behind the lens.” “In a remote village in Bolivia’s Cordillera Quimsa Cruz, local kids look at the picture Porter Fox just took of them. Far outside La Paz and the last village on a dead-end road that skirts the mountain range, the boys were playing soccer until we rolled in—five Americans stuffed inside a Land Rover driven by our local guide and our local camp guard, who was packing heat. “Standing on the summit ridge of Cody Peak, a stiff westerly wind buffeted me while gray clouds sped overhead. Sunlight came and went as I crawled on hands and knees toward the edge. Belly down for the final few feet, ski boot toes dug into the scree, inching forward on the downward tilting slope just far enough to see into Central Couloir, I framed the shot and fired off a few photos of Conor probing the lip with his ski pole. He saw that I was in position when suddenly the light hit us with full power. Conor dropped in, but as quickly as it came, the light faded.
