WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: ✨SABINA MEACHAM ✨
-
Sophomore Sabina Meacham has been involved with the Waterloo Robotics team, where she contributes her graphic design skills to the team’s social media. After graduation, she has hopes to pursue a career in fashion design or architecture. With the help of her mother’s influence, Meacham began her crocheting hobby two to three years ago and has continued to grow her skills in crocheting, creating impressive pieces.
-
What began your journey in crocheting?
→ My mom had always done it, so fine arts have been passed down through my family for quite a bit. I just caught onto it eventually.
-
Have you sold any of your crochet items? If so, how are you advertising it for people to buy it?
→I don’t necessarily advertise it, but I have sold it to some people outside of school.
-
What is your favorite piece you’ve made so far?
→ I made a hoodie for a commission that took a month, and I really like that. I’ve also made three or four things, including a bag and two seat covers.
-
Would you continue this hobby in the future after high school? Why or why not?
→ Hopefully! It gives me something to do with my hands, and I always do things with my hands.

✨WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: Caragin Conley✨
-
Freshman Caragin Conley has been involved in trapshooting for about four years. After discovering international trapshooting just over a year ago, she has continued to challenge herself, earning accomplishments including National Champion and placing third at the USA Shooting Junior Olympics.
-
How did you originally get interested in trapshooting and what inspired you to start?
→ My first impression of the sport was actually the email that was sent out by my team. When I first heard about it, I had absolutely no clue what it was, but when I looked it up I thought it looked pretty cool and wanted to at least go to the informational meeting and hear more about it. After we went to the informational meeting my mom had told me that this was actually something that my dad who had passed away when I was in fifth grade used to enjoy (even though he wasn’t very good), which interested me even more and that was when I decided I wanted to try it out.
-
What would you say is your greatest achievement in trapshooting so far?
→ I think that my greatest accomplishment so far is when I won 2025 top gun on my team, meaning that my coaches decided to recognize me for my sportsmanship and good attitude towards everyone; this achievement meant so much to me because that same year I started off the season pretty rough as I was still recovering from a broken collar bone.
I was so honored to receive this recognition because I pride myself on trying to lift people up when they don’t feel like they can or want to continue.
-
What are some goals you have for yourself in trapshooting going forward and what do you hope to achieve?
→ My goals for trapshooting aren’t anything super specific because I don’t like when people try to get everything down to be one exact thing because I think this tends to cause people to put too much pressure on themselves when they come anywhere near achieving them; so my current goal for myself is to focus on one thing at a time and once I am happy with the level I achieve, I can find the next thing I need to improve on.

The September Yearbook Staffer of the Month is… BELLA!! Bella was nominated by a few of her peers for going above and beyond her role as the Yearbook Social Media and Marketing Editor within the month of September
-
One classmate wrote “she has been super helpful not only to me, but the other yearbook staff. Bella is always willing to help me out with anything, and gives me great advice whenever I ask for it. She is a very encouraging person, and I always notice she strives to help others however she can while also keeping a positive attitude!”
-
Another classmate wrote “she has been very helpful with ideas and feedback for me, especially in areas that I have been struggling in. I always know I can count on her to help me out.”
-
Her classmates applaud her for her hard work. They recognize her willingness to help and give feedback without making them feel embarrassed in any way. Her classmates recognized Bella for putting in constant effort, always putting her best foot forward in class each day, her ability to ask questions and give feedback, her positive energy, and creating a fun vibe for our Wahawk Wednesdays.

WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: ✨MAX RIDGEWAY✨
-
Sophomore Max Ridgeway has been involved with multiple artistic activities such as Band, Large Group Speech, and Theatre. However, outside of West High, he pursues his interest in fashion design by becoming a fashion creator. Bringing his passion to the school campus, he creates a new series on Instagram named “Swaggy Minds,” designed to interview and praise West High students for their outfits.
-
Where did you originally get your inspiration to start “Swaggy Minds” from?
→I got my inspiration really just from seeing how many people were having so many good outfits, such good inspiration and wasn’t really able to get that message out. Also, I wanted to try and do something new with my type of career and social media.
-
What are your main goals for the series that you have currently?
→I want people to really see that West has a lot of unique and pretty cool people around here. So I really just want people to come together and try to see what type of unique people and unique types of things are here at West.
-
Where do you see “Swaggy Minds” going in the future?
→I see myself continuing it if people want to and if I want to also. But I also see myself taking it from West to really anywhere that has really unique people, like maybe some colleges, maybe some schools around here like the East. It really doesn’t matter where to me. It’s just based on where I feel like has the most unique type of people.
-
How do you find and choose people that you’ll feature on your series?
→I find people based off of two types of things. One, they have a good outfit and two, they really have a passion for this. I want people who actually have or want the time and energy to look at something, see how it looks, try to replicate it, try to do their own style by branching off, try to do all of that.

WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: ✨Harrison Ritter✨
-
Senior Harrison Ritter has been involved throughout his time at West High including being a member of the Golf Team, Swim Team, Tennis Team, BPA, Waterloo Youth City Council and Student Senate. In his senior year, he takes on the role of Student Body President.
-
Why did you run for class president and how has it affected you as a person?
→ I feel like I wanted to run for it because we haven't seen any male leadership in the past few years so I felt like that was a big one.
-
What do you plan to do for West High with the title of Student Body President?
→ I'm looking forward to possibly opening up the courtyard for students to eat outside during lunch.
-
How do you manage doing golf, swimming, senate, and everything else all at once and how has that shifted your high school experience?
→ I feel like balancing your time is everything but if you plan everything out and know where you need to be and at what times it isn't the most difficult thing.
-
Since it is golf season currently, what goals outside of school are you hoping to accomplish through the rest of the golf season and throughout the swim season coming up as well?
→ I plan on making state as a team and during swim to possibly qualify as an individual.

What are your future plans after graduation?
→ I plan on going to a four year college to study cybersecurity.

WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: ✨ALEAH VANROEKEL✨
Junior Aleah Vanroekel has been involved in Swim and Dive at Waterloo West through her high school years. With the goal of making state, Vanroekel shares her gratitude after winning 1st place at the Cedar Falls dual meet.
-
Did you go into this meet feeling like you would win?
→I actually had very little confidence and felt like I would not win at all. Cedar Falls has always been pretty good, two of their divers are ranked higher than me so I didn’t expect to beat them both.
-
How did you prepare for this meet?
→I went through every dive carefully, and broke down everything. I had a talk with my coach and teammate and just regrouped myself and focused on one dive at a time. And not stressing about winning, but just beating my PR.
-
What dive did you feel was your hardest to nail down?
→The hardest one was probably my double because it was a new dive and a higher difficulty. I had only thrown it a couple of times so it was a little bit more scary for me to throw. I told myself I want to make it to state and if I get this dive it will build up my difficulties and bring my score up. So I told myself to do it and I did it!
-
What was your first thought after you saw your final score?
→I was really excited and I was with my family so they were super stoked that I was able to beat Cedar Falls. I didn’t beat my PR but I mean, beating Cedar Falls in general was really good because they were always good at swimming and diving. So I was super excited!

WAHAWK WEDNESDAY: ✨AJA OSEGUERA-MILLS✨
-
Junior Aja Oseguera-Mills has been involved in West High Theatre throughout her high school experience, including main stage productions and Large Group Speech. For the 2026-2027 school year, she is taking on a leadership role state-wide as a member of RISE, the official student leadership group for the Iowa High School Speech Association.
-
When did you start getting involved in speech and theatre?
→I wanted to start back in middle school, and then in my freshman year of high school. I got into the fall play, and then I got involved in Readers Theatre and Short Film. I wanted to do as much theatre as I could, and the thought of theatre competition sounded fun to me. It's always been my passion to be an actress, and I think acting. I think theatre can really help in the real world, especially with communication and talking to people. It puts a lot of problem solving, especially on stage, and you know if you need that, talking to people, that would help to solve problems and communication. You really need that on stage. So I think in theatre you really practice that and learn how to communicate.
-
What is RISE? When you applied for RISE, did you think you were going to get in?
→RISE is the student team for Iowa High School Speech Association, and basically we help out with the people who are in charge, the directors. I kind of had a feeling because Stacy Hanson, the (IHSSA) director, came to me and told me I should apply. I think she just stared me down, and I think she just had a feeling.
-
When you finally heard the news that you got into rise, how did that feel?
→I was really excited, but also kind of nervous because I didn't know what RISE came with and what the requirements and like what was asked of me.
-
If anyone else from speech is looking to get involved into RISE, what would you tell them to do?
→Do it, even if you don't get in. You can always try again next year if you're not a senior, and it's really worth the time. And making the video is fun, so be creative.
