Why do we need Marine Protected Areas? MPAs are designated places in the ocean where human activities are limited to give marine life a chance to rebound and regenerate. When we give the ocean a break, we can enjoy its resources for years to come.

#30X30 just got a big boost! Ecuador recently designated a new 60,000 square kilometer marine reserve to expand marine protections around the Galápagos islands. The new Hermandad Marine Reserve includes a 30,000-square-kilometer fully protected area that will safeguard a migratory corridor used by many species between the Galápagos and Cocos Island.

In 2018, we conducted a #WaittExpedition to study the swimway between the Galapagos Islands and Cocos Islands and determine opportunities for protection.

Costa Rica just made a big move for marine protection. Last Friday, the nation announced that it will expand its protected ocean area from 2.7% to more than 30%! Costa Rica’s Cocos Island National Park, a protected marine reserve since 1982, will grow 27 times larger in size.

Congratulations to Fiji for taking an important step into the future of ocean stewardship! As historic voyagers and canoe builders for the Pacific, Fijian culture is inseparable from the ocean.

The Fijian Government entered into a partnership with the @waittinstitute to launch a #BlueProsperity program that will implement 30% protection of Fiji’s waters and support ocean management in three core areas: Marine Spatial Planning, Blue economy, and Sustainable Fisheries. We are excited to see Fiji’s leadership toward a better, bluer and more sustainable future.

The Selvagens Islands (Ilhas Selvagens) are home to one of the most intact marine environments in the Northeast Atlantic. The Regional Government of Madeira has now expanded the Selvagens Nature Reserve to create the largest fully protected marine area in Europe and the North Atlantic! This is a reinforcement of Madeira's commitment to enhanced protection of a unique ocean ecosystem teeming with life.

Back in 2015, @waittinstitute partnered with @natgeopristineseas and @oceanoazulfoundation to conduct a scientific expedition that served to inform the government’s designation. We applaud the Regional Government of Madeira for their bold leadership in marine conservation.

In 2018, we embarked on a scientific expedition to study the swimway between the Galapagos Islands and Cocos Islands. Three years later, the governments of Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Costa Rica have banded together to create a mega-marine protected area to connect their waters and protect endangered species such as sea turtles, whales, sharks and rays. We're grateful for their continued leadership and work in preserving these environments.

Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Costa Rica have joined forces to create a mega-marine protected area. The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor initiative, will create a fishing-free corridor covering more than 500,000 sq km (200,000 sq miles) in one of the world’s most important migratory routes for sea turtles, whales, sharks and rays. The expansion creates a “safe swimway” connecting Ecuadorian and Costa Rican waters where many endangered species travel.

In 2018, we conducted a #WaittExpedition to study the Galapagos-Cocos Swimway, visiting iconic sites such as Darwin Island in the Galapagos National Park, the Galapagos Marine Reserve, Paramount, Medina and West Cocos Seamounts on the Cocos ridge, Las Gemelas Seamounts and Cocos Island. This research from this expedition was a precursor to this new agreement. Swipe for a few highlights from this expedition.

Countdown to #COP26! The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as #COP26, will be held from Oct. 31 - Nov. 12. World leaders will soon gather in effort to coordinate action against climate change impacts.

However, we can't forget about the ocean! Ocean action is climate action. If we want to protect environments and communities from climate change, we need to protect the ocean.
