You can find La Moutarde nestled on the sunniest corner of Place Saint-Boniface, a charming neighbourhood bistro that perfectly captures the spirit of Brussels.

The menu is a love letter to traditional brasserie fare, featuring beloved classics such as shrimp croquettes, steak tartare, sausage and purée, and the iconic dame blanche. The dishes are comforting, generous, and executed with great attention to detail.

The interior strikes the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. Dark wood panelling, deep blue velvet banquettes, and retro-inspired tables create an atmosphere that feels effortlessly Parisian while remaining distinctly Brussels. A special shoutout goes to the cosy terrace, which is fully bathed in sunshine at lunchtime and quickly becomes one of the most sought-after spots on Place Saint-Boniface.

TThe service is relaxed, warm, and genuinely welcoming. Combined with soft lighting and a carefully curated music ambiance, the result is a restaurant that feels instantly comfortable yet classy.

La Moutarde is exactly the kind of neighbourhood bistro Brussels needs: elegant without being pretentious, classic without feeling outdated, and effortlessly inviting from the moment you walk through the door. A place that feels equally suited for a long lunch in the sun, a relaxed dinner with friends, or a spontaneous glass of wine on the terrace.

Some places come and go. De Kastart is one of those rare Ghent institutions that seems to stand the test of time. The restaurant has been around for more than 20 years, while its famous Kastart sauce recipe itself dates back over 30 years.

As a student in Ghent, I must have eaten here dozens of times. Fast forward a few years, and I still find myself returning. Not because it’s trendy, not because it’s the newest hotspot in town, but because sometimes you simply crave KastartThe concept is simple. No reservations, just show up and join the queue. The place is almost always buzzing, filled with students, locals, tourists and regulars who have been coming here for years.

And then there’s the sauce. Ask anyone what’s in it and you’ll get a different answer. The recipe remains a closely guarded secret, and perhaps that’s exactly how it should stay. All I know is that it keeps people coming back generation after generation.

Obviously, I went for the legendary Spaghetti Kastart. Let’s be honest: where do you still find a spaghetti for €14 these days? Especially one that has people lining up outside the door. The portion labelled as “small” is more than enough for most people, making De Kastart one of the best value-for-money meals in Ghent.
What I appreciate most is that De Kastart has never tried to reinvent itself. No unnecessary twists, no gimmicks, no attempts to turn a classic into something it’s not. It knows exactly what it is, and it does it well.
And if you don’t feel like waiting for a table, there’s always the take-away next door, making it one of the easiest comfort-food fixes in the city.

Worth a visit? Always. Whether you’re a student discovering it for the first time or someone revisiting an old favourite, Kastart remains one of those places that simply belongs to Ghent.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the 6-course tasting menu with wine pairing at LOF Restaurant, located in the beautiful Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Reylof in Ghent.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that attention to detail is at the heart of the experience. A lovely touch was the small menu card provided to each guest, allowing you to follow the different courses throughout the evening and fully appreciate the culinary journey.
The menu was beautifully balanced and showcased both creativity and technical expertise. While every course was thoughtfully prepared, the foie gras was an absolute standout for me, offering incredible depth of flavour and refinement. The beef tenderloin was equally impressive, cooked to perfection and paired with ingredients that enhanced rather than overshadowed the quality of the meat. The wine pairing was carefully selected and complemented each course beautifully, elevating the overall experience.

What makes LOF so special is that it delivers a true fine dining experience without ever feeling stiff or pretentious. The service was attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely welcoming, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and warmth.

The evening was further enhanced by the restaurant’s stunning interior. The atmosphere is warm, elegant and incredibly cosy, making it the perfect destination for a date night. I particularly loved that some tables offer seating next to each other rather than across from one another. It may seem like a small detail, but it creates a much more intimate and connected dining experience, which is exactly what you want when celebrating with someone special.

LOF is an amazing choice for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion with their favourite person. Combining outstanding cuisine, excellent wine pairings, impeccable service and a beautifully intimate setting, it is a restaurant that leaves a lasting impression and one I would happily recommend.

If you’re craving a proper New York-style sandwich, Elbow Lunch Counter is the place to go. Hidden in Matongé, this small spot feels like a slice of the US, with its retro counter, vintage stools, neon menus and laid-back soundtrack.

Before ordering, we asked the chef which sandwiches we absolutely had to try. The answer came without hesitation: the Pastrami Reuben and the Philly Cheesesteak.

Let’s start with the pastrami. Wow. Honestly, without exaggerating, it might be the best pastrami I’ve ever had. They import the meat from the US and prepare the pastrami in-house, and you can taste the difference immediately. The meat was unbelievably tender, juicy and packed with flavour. Combined with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on rye bread, it was everything a Reuben should be and more. One of those rare dishes that makes you stop talking for a moment because you’re too busy enjoying every bite.
The Philly Cheesesteak was equally satisfying: rich, messy, indulgent and loaded with flavour. Exactly the kind of comfort food you hope for when ordering this American classic.

A special mention for the team. The chefs are a vibe on their own: super friendly, passionate and happy to guide you through the menu. That warmth makes the whole experience feel even more authentic and memorable.
The portions are generous, the atmosphere is fun, and absolutely nobody comes here to count calories. Pair your sandwich with a homemade lemonade or a bottomless filter coffee, sit back and enjoy.

Opened only a few months ago, in June 2026, Edmond has quickly become one of Ghent’s newest hotspots.
Edmond is exactly the kind of place you want to have on your radar for those spontaneous Friday evenings with friends. No elaborate dinner plans, just good drinks, casual food and a lively atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer.

Located on the Vrijdagmarkt, the setting couldn’t be much better. The place is surprisingly spacious, with a large terrace, plenty of seating inside and even a pool table. The DJ adds just the right energy, making it the perfect place for drinks, bites and good conversations.
Another thing I loved? You can actually make a reservation. A small detail, but not something you see very often at places with this kind of laid-back bar vibe.
As for the food, the tempura cauliflower is an absolute must-order. Honestly, it was so good and one of the highlights of the evening.

Fair prices, great vibes, a prime location and the kind of place where one drink quickly turns into several. Edmond is definitely a spot I’ll be returning to.

If you’re looking for Vietnamese food beyond the classics, Nénu is a must-visit. Located in Saint-Gilles, the restaurant is inspired by the Vietnamese tradition of sharing dishes, making it the perfect spot to order several plates for the table.

Three dishes absolutely stood out for me. The Nems “Nénuphar” with pork were perfectly crispy and dangerously addictive. The Pork Wonton with smoked eel and chilli oil was a true flavour bomb, balancing richness, smokiness and spice in every bite. Michelin even highlights this as one of Nénu’s signature dishes. And finally, the Bánh Cuốn, delicate steamed rice pancakes filled with minced pork, showed how impressive Vietnamese cuisine can be when simplicity is executed perfectly.

The atmosphere is vibrant, the plates are made for sharing, and the food manages to feel both authentic and modern at the same time. It’s no surprise that Nénu has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, recognizing its excellent value for money.

The interior deserves a special mention as well. Warm lighting, cosy corners and an intimate setting make it the perfect place for a date night, while still being lively enough for a dinner with friends.

Housed in a former petrol station in Ledeberg, BASK revolves around one thing: the asador, the traditional Basque wood-fired grill that sits at the heart of the open kitchen. Everything here is built around fire, exceptional produce and craftsmanship.

We opted for the 7-course Experience Menu (€92 pp), although you can also order à la carte, if you prefer more flexibility.

Let me be honest: this is not an inexpensive night out. But BASK isn’t trying to be. This is a restaurant that invests heavily in sourcing, whether it’s lobster, turbot, txuleta or the Bresse poultry they’re famous for. Throughout the menu you really taste the quality of the ingredients, with every dish stripped back to its essence rather than hidden behind unnecessary complexity.

The highlight of the evening? Without a doubt the Bresse chicken, BASK’s signature dish. Perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy and accompanied by a deep, rich jus that showed exactly why @sam_dhuyvetter has built such a strong reputation. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the hardest to execute, and this was proof of that.

What I appreciated most was that the experience never felt forced. No theatrical smoke domes, no gimmicks. Just wood fire, outstanding produce and a kitchen that clearly knows when to intervene and when to let the ingredient speak for itself.

BASK currently holds a 14.5/20 @gaultmillaubelgium score and has also earned recognition in the Michelin Guide, which feels completely justified after this visit.

Located on the lively Koophandelsplein, @brasserie_midi_gent has long been a favourite among Ghent locals and it’s easy to see why. Combining timeless elegance with the warm atmosphere of a true French brasserie, this is the kind of place where you instantly feel like settling in for a long lunch or dinner.

From the crisp white tablecloths and softly lit dining room to the attentive service, every detail reflects the charm of traditional brasserie dining. The menu stays true to French classics, focusing on quality ingredients and authentic flavours rather than unnecessary twists.
I went for my all-time favourite: the steak tartare with French fries. Prepared with care and packed with flavour, it was everything you hope for from a classic steak tartar: fresh, perfectly seasoned, and served with crispy golden fries. A simple dish, executed exactly as it should be.

And if there’s one thing that makes Brasserie Midi even more special, it’s the terrace. Overlooking Koophandelsplein, it’s undoubtedly one of the best terraces in Ghent to enjoy the sunshine while watching the city go by. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, dinner, or just a glass of wine, Brasserie Midi offers a timeless dining experience where classic French cuisine, elegant surroundings, and genuine hospitality come together beautifully.

If you’re looking for one of the best value fine dining experiences in Ghent, @raaf_gent deserves a spot on your list.

This trendy restaurant combines creative cooking with the warm, down to earth atmosphere Ghent is known for. Instead of an à la carte menu, the talented chef duo serves one seasonal tasting menu, available in 5, 6 or 7 courses. And the best part? The 5-course menu costs just €58. Finding this level of quality at that price is rare.

Every dish was beautifully presented, packed with original flavour combinations and full of surprises. Nothing felt predictable, and each course showcased the chefs’ creativity while keeping the ingredients at the centre.

The setting is just as impressive. Housed in a beautifully restored former slaughterhouse, the interior is stylish, modern and full of character. On sunny days, the spacious terrace makes it an even more enjoyable place to spend an afternoon or evening.

A fantastic price-to-quality ratio, creative cuisine and a relaxed atmosphere make Raaf one of Ghent’s top dining spots. We can’t wait to come back.

How have I never been to Aperto Chiuso before?

Tucked away in the Sleepstraat in Ghent, this charming Italian restaurant immediately made me wonder how I had managed to miss it all these years. I get the impression that locals have known about this place for a long time, yet somehow it has remained under the radar for many tourists. Their loss, because Aperto Chiuso is an absolute gem.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a warm and cosy interior that feels authentically Italian. On warmer days, the lovely terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a long lunch or relaxed dinner. What makes the experience even more special is that there is just one chef in the kitchen, preparing everything himself with remarkable care and consistency.

We started by sharing the Antipasta del Giorno, a delicious assortment of marinated vegetables, cured meats, cheeses, and anchovies. The perfect way to kick off the meal and a great showcase of the quality ingredients used throughout the menu.

The real stars, however, are the homemade pastas. Every pasta dish is made in-house, and you can taste the difference. Since we ordered different dishes, I naturally had to try a bit of everyone’s plate, and each one delivered exactly what you’re looking for in a great Italian restaurant: comforting, rich flavours and perfectly cooked pasta.

I tried ordered myself the Linguine Nero with scampi, tomato sauce, feta, and basil (€23) but also had a bite of the Conchiglie Porcini (€22), featuring dried porcini mushrooms in a creamy cheese sauce and the Ravioli of beetroot and ricotta with brown butter, poppy seeds, and Parmesan (€22).

Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night or a cosy dinner with friends around the long communal table, Aperto Chiuso delivers. It combines everything I love about Italian dining: simple ingredients, homemade pasta, warm hospitality, and dishes that make you want to come back before you’ve even finished your meal.
A true hidden gem in Ghent and one I’ll definitely be returning to.

@elturco.be is one of my favorite lunch spots in Brussels’ European Quarter, located on the lively Place de Londres. Judging by how busy it gets, it’s clearly a favorite among locals, and after one visit, it’s easy to understand why.

The concept is refreshingly simple: there is no fixed menu. Instead, El Turqo offers a seasonal Mediterranean buffet with Ottoman influences, where everything is 100% homemade and prepared according to the freshness of available ingredients. The flavors are exquisite and every dish feels crafted with care.

The cold buffet is entirely vegetarian and features an incredible variety of mezze. It’s tempting to fill your plate immediately with all the delicious options, but my advice is to leave some room because the hot dishes at the end of the buffet are absolutely worth it.

The self-service system is also very convenient: you can put as much or as little on your plate as you like, and at the cashier, your plate is simply weighed. The current price is €3.86 per 100 grams, which allows you to tailor your meal exactly to your appetite.

On sunny days, the lovely terrace overlooking Place de Londres is the perfect place to sit back, soak up the atmosphere, and enjoy your meal in the heart of the European Quarter. The restaurant also offers takeaway boxes, making it easy to enjoy the food at the office or at home.

I absolutely love El Turqo and will definitely keep coming back. Between the exceptional homemade food, the constantly changing selection, the welcoming atmosphere, and the fantastic terrace, it’s a true gem in Brussels and one of the best lunch options in the neighborhood.

@wanandonly.gent is one of those places every Ghent local should know. This charming Belgian brasserie combines everything you could want for a relaxed lunch, dinner, or even just drinks with friends. In the warmer months, the lovely terrace is the perfect spot to soak up the atmosphere, while the cosy and inviting interior makes you feel right at home year-round.

Not in the mood for a full meal? No problem. The Wan and Only is also a great place to stop by for a drink and a few snacks to share. The menu features a selection of local and craft beers, alongside an extensive natural wine list. If you’re unsure what to choose, the friendly and knowledgeable staff are more than happy to recommend a wine that matches both your taste and budget.

If you do decide to stay for dinner, you’re in for a treat. The menu celebrates classic Belgian cuisine, with dishes such as Flemish stew, steak tartare, sliptong, and vol-au-vent, all served with a generous portion of Belgian fries. The food is honest, comforting, and full of flavour. You can tell everything is prepared fresh and with genuine care.

The price-quality ratio is excellent, making The Wan and Only a reliable favourite for both locals and visitors. A true Ghent institution and a restaurant you simply shouldn’t miss.
