Day 2 Schedule! 2026 Canadian Wakeboard and Wakeskate Nationals. by @wakebc
Throwing back to the FIRST EVER 🇨🇦 CANADIAN WAKEBOARD CHAMPIONSHIP in 1996, Hidden Valley Resort, Muskoka, Ontario! This weekend’s 2026 WAKEBOARD NATIONALS hosted by @wakebc at Deas Slough, Delta, BC marks the 30th ANNIVERSARY of the Championships! At the ‘96 Nationals, @hyperlitewake was the title sponsor. Huntsville’s Pipeline Surf & Snowboard Shop was the presenting sponsor. Over 100 riders participated, including many who went on to become wakeboard legends, none bigger than BC’s JEFF HEER @jeffheer74 and Ontario’s JEREMY KOVAK. Heer nosed out Kovak in Open Pro Men to become the inaugural Canadian Champ. With BC’s @jamierizzuto grabbing 3rd! Heer went on to win the 1996 @thewwa Wakeboard Worlds as well as the inaugural Wakestock World Cup (Canada) in 1998. Kovak, the 1993 WWA World Champ went on to win 1997 @xgames Wakeboard and the 1997 WWA Worlds. The largest category at the 1996 Nationals was the Men’s 19+ with 20 riders, won by Alberta’s Jason Gardner. Followed closely by BC’s @steven_critchley (2nd) and Jamie Rizutto (3rd). Ontario’s @dave_tsuyuki rounded out the top four. Ontario’s @seanfleming1 won the Jr Boys (age 16-18), followed by Chris Thompson and Todd Schell, also from Ontario. Ontario wakeboard pioneers Jeff Barnes and @jakethomasrolls led the organizational charge alternating as head judges and MC’s. Interesting trivia from ‘96 Nationals: - it featured WWA rules and formats (water skiers at IWWF did not even recognize wakeboarding until 1997) - included a “double-up” contest in Open Men, in addition to “Expression Session” - pulled by @malibuboats “Echelon” inboard enhanced with Canadian innovated “Launch Pad” ballast bags and “Joystick” extended pylon (by @howieouterbridge). Full circle note: Malibu is pulling the 2026 Nationals. - Ontario Water Ski Assoc Exec Director at the time commented: “Wakeboarding is exploding! Sponsors are arguing over the rights to the first Canadian Wakeboard Championships, while one of them described Water Ski Nationals as something to run away from!” #wakeboarding #wakeboardnationals #30yearsinthemaking #30thanniversary #canadianwakemag by @wakebc
