What if understanding your brain changed everything?
Neurocognitive leadership, behaviour change and inclusive culture.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
'Transformation' is the plan. (It seems to be every business's plan from what I'm hearing!)

Resilient Growth is what makes it happen the human way.

Before running the most recent Resilient Growth Series, part of the discovery was asking leaders and managers where their energy was going. 75% said supporting their team through uncertainty and change.

It was clear each leader cared deeply about their teams. What stood out for me, and what I highlighted right at the top of our first session together, was that they ranked their teams' needs over their own. The culture at this company is full of people doing their best for one another, but the world, market, and business circumstances are what's causing uncertainty and worry.

This is a story I know so many of us relate to.

Leaders were concerned that they didn't want to feel performative or inauthentic in speaking about resilience and growth with their teams in a time when they themselves too felt the discomfort of uncertainty every day.

So we talked about it. Acknowledged it. And focused on practical understanding and tools that work with how our brains are wired to navigate the ever-turbulent sea of change when so much feels out of our control.

If your organisation is mid-transformation and your leaders are carrying the weight of it, I'd love to talk about what this could look like for your people.

This series is hugely rewarding to be a part of, both for me as the facilitator and for my clients who want a human-centred approach that still acknowledges the reality of what they're facing.

The block that was keeping me from posting? A worry about sharing my ideas in the “wrong order.”

Ridiculous to write down. But that is exactly what it was.

We are living through a season of real uncertainty, at work, in the economy, in ordinary daily life. And here is the cruel irony: uncertainty pushes our million year old brains into a protective, survival state. Yet that is the opposite of the open, flexible, willing to fail state that uncertainty actually demands of us. The very thing we need to navigate change is the thing our brain quietly switches off.

For me, that has shown up as paralysis. The paralysis of perfection. If the restart could not be “perfect”, I did not restart at all.

So I wrote about it instead. About rejection sensitivity, about the spotlight effect and how little anyone is truly watching, and about why “just fail more” is not such simple advice for every neurotype.

No neat five step fix. Just one island of certainty I keep having to relearn: the doing is what dissolves the paralysis, not the waiting to do it perfectly.

New essay is up now, link in bio. If you are feeling a bit at sea right now, this one is for you

Sometimes we need reminding that good enough, is good enough. Especially on days where our energy levels are not in top form. Let’s remind our inner critic of that finite resource, and help change the way we speak to ourselves, and what we expect from ourselves on different days #innercritic #mentalhabits by @wakeuptowhy

New skill unlocked!
Up until recently, I haven’t had to do much self-promotion. But now l’ve gotten to a stage where to really feel like I’m practicing what I preach, combating some limiting beliefs, and trying to live my ‘purpose’ (or at least what I perceived to be my purpose right now) I need to put myself out there more. So hello, let’s see where this goes #limitingbeliefsbegone

My latest Substack is up!

I caught myself recently almost making a choice no one else would have noticed. The kind that doesn’t feel like much in the moment, but quietly rewrites who you’re becoming as a professional.

It was about AI, and about a value I’d set for myself when I started writing on Substack. Essentially, that it would always be ME doing the writing. In this piece on ‘Mind by Design’ I talk about what stopped me posting a piece, and why writing is a powerful workout for our cognitive architecture (albeit very tempting to outsource to AI).

If your work is being reshaped by AI in real time, like so many of ours is, this piece is something for you to reflect on. by @wakeuptowhy

I’ve been thinking about why we do things we don’t want to do. And don’t do things we really do want to do.
Not in a self-critical way. In a genuinely curious one.
Because I’ve spent years studying the psychology and neuroscience behind exactly that question, and the more I understand it, the more one thing becomes clear: most of us are working against our own brains without realising it.
Not because we’re weak. Not because we don’t care enough. Because nobody ever explained how the thing actually works.
That’s what Mind by Design is. A space where I write about the science of why your brain does what it does. Made human. No jargon, no silver bullets, no telling you to just think more positively.
Just the real stuff. The roots and the guts of it.
The first piece is up now. It’s a bit of a manifesto, I suppose. A statement of intent about why I’m building this and what I believe about how minds actually change.
Link in my bio, or in the comments below.
I’d love for you to be there from the start. #mindbydesign #neuroscience #psychology by @wakeuptowhy
