🇺🇸 In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, WALCO is highlighting one historic person, place or thing each week during the year. We hope this list inspires you to visit some of the historical places around Walworth County.

See you (anywhere) along the shore of Geneva Lake!

🥾 If you have 8-10 hours to spare during your visit to Lake Geneva, consider walking the entire Lake Shore Path, also known as the Historic Indian Trail. (Most of us don’t walk all of it on one day—save some for another outing!)

Early settlers preserved the 26 miles of footpath along the shore of Geneva Lake. A court case in 1975 declared the trail to be public domain and property owners responsible for maintaining the path through each of their properties, which still applies today.

The path crosses the front lawns of historic lakefront estates giving you up-close views of beautifully landscaped yards, gardens, boats, piers and lake activity. Walking surfaces vary from grass, cement, and brick to wood, stepping stones, and gravel as homeowners put their own personal touches on their part of the path. Wear sturdy walking shoes!

Guidebooks range from free pocket-sized manuals to comprehensive booklets for purchase, as well as information on various tourist websites and local articles.

Public access points include:
• Lake Geneva Library Park
• Chapin Road
• Williams Bay
• Fontana
• Shadow Lane
• Big Foot Beach State Park

Be sure to tag us in your pics and videos of your Geneva Lake Shore Path adventures! taken in Lake Geneva Lake Shore Path by @walcowi

🇺🇸 In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, WALCO is highlighting one historic person, place or thing each week during the year. We hope this list inspires you to visit some of the historical places around Walworth County.

Whitewater’s Starin Park Water Tower

For many years, the Starin Park Water Tower has been the location for stories about the “Whitewater witches” and every October, it becomes part of “haunted” Whitewater legends. But aside from being a “spooky” location, the water tower is an important historic landmark.

In 1889, the city of Whitewater contracted with a private company to build a waterworks that included a tower, a pumping station and reservoir, and several miles of water mains. The water tower, made of local limestone with its original steel tank is being completed in this historic view.

It has recently just been taken out of active service and preservation efforts of this landmark are ongoing. taken in Whitewater, Wisconsin by @walcowi

🇺🇸 In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, WALCO is highlighting one historic person, place or thing each week during the year. We hope this list inspires you to visit some of the historical places around Walworth County.

See you on Snake Road!

🍁 Expect a spectacular canopy of red and yellow maple leaves for fall color! Snake Road is one of seven Rustic Roads in Walworth County…always a pleasant drive (or bike ride) but especially in the autumn! The driveways and gate houses (all private) to some of Geneva Lake’s most famous mansions are visible as you leisurely go by.

🚗 Drive by Woods School…one of the oldest schoolhouses still in use in Wisconsin. The district was formed in 1857. Look for the stone wall (donated by S B Chapin) that delineated the original school property. The original brick structure, from 1886, is currently the school library. taken in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin by @walcowi
