“Touch me with your eyes” is what this flower would whisper if it would chose to speak. 🪷👀

Everything in this painting is alive at full volume. Every shape, curve and dash of color blossoms with irresistible abundance. It reminds us to ask ourselves: Where are we holding back our aliveness? Where do we want to be more lush?

This process sums up why I love making art. It’s full of delightful detours.

The feeling of frustration can turn into fabulousness within seconds.

This painting went through a lot of ups and downs, and doubts. Until it ended up magical and magnetic. Eyes and souls are drawn to it.

How to start your own artist residency. 🎨🌊

Step 1: Find a beautiful little fisherman’s cottage by the sea.

Step 2: Bring a ridiculous amount of paint and a bunch of empty canvases.

Step 3: Make absolutely no plans.

I’ve found myself a little secret on the coast of Mallorca. A gorgeous hideaway where the Mediterranean is practically at my doorstep, the sunsets are ridiculous, and time moves a little differently.

The perfect place for artists, dreamers, writers, thinkers, or anyone who just wants to disappear from the world for a little while.

For the next few weeks, this is home.

I’ll be swimming, eating, wandering, painting, and generally trying to catch a few colours along the way.

No idea what will come out of it.

But I have a feeling this little place might have something to do with it.

Let’s see what I catch. 🎣

Ad | Full disclosure: I’m paying for my stay at this beautiful little place, and I’ve teamed up with the owners of @casitasdepescadores to create a couple of reels while I’m here. The love for this place is entirely my own. 🌊 taken in Mallorca, Islas Baleares, Spain by @waldemar

Behind the canvas of “Wild & Free”.

We painted this one in January 2025, just after New Year’s Eve, on the cliffs of Mallorca.

The idea was simple: what happens if the canvas doesn’t stay still?

So Monika wore it. We danced. Waldemar painted. Monika painted. The canvas moved with us. At some point it became difficult to tell who was painting what.

Which was exactly the point.

Less control. More play. More trust. More paint absolutely everywhere.

And somehow, by sunset, there it was.

Wild & Free.

Thank you @steffenstaeuber for capturing the whole beautiful experiment 🫶✨ and @fabrikderkuenste for eventually giving our very well-travelled piece of canvas some beautiful walls to hang on. 🙏 by @waldemar

Who said a canvas should be still?

Two artists, one wearing a canvas and the other armed with brush and colors dance with each other. No plan, just pure play & presence. And the whole thing escalates beautifully.

What do you think of the finished paintings?

What does the desert tell you when everyone else has gone?

Painted in the Karoo with Wiebke Bols, after the dust of AfrikaBurn had settled. Two people, one canvas, surrounded by nothing. A painting about what the desert reveals when you stay long enough to listen.

44 dances around the sun.
And this is the best I could come up with?

Yup.

Still curious. Still confused. Still making things. Still occasionally convinced I’ve ruined a painting five minutes before I love it.

Also, hats.

Artists are strange little creatures.

We obsess over a color that is almost right..

We stare at a painting for an hour, add one tiny line, then stare at it for another hour.

We photograph weird walls. See faces in paint stains. Ruin perfectly good clothes...

We say “finished” and absolutely do not mean it.

And sometimes, apparently, we put on a kimono and a headlamp and paint in the dark, in a Cottage in the Karoo Desert after AfrikaBurn.

Everyone had left. The desert was asleep. I wasn’t. The painting had ideas...

This canvas turned in The Alchemist.

The Alchemist was born in the Karoo Desert. Now I’m trying to imagine where he might live next…

Turns out he’s surprisingly adaptable. Terracotta. White. Dark green. He brings his own weather.

I watched a whole world burn, then I painted this. Right after AfrikaBurn, in the Karoo Desert of South Africa. The beginning of my painting pilgrimage.
