Cool swag! Enjoy many musical acts and the actual art from the book! Everyone is welcome! Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, VA! ❤️🎵❤️🎵❤️ by @walkerbooksus
It’s the last ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z Wednesday post—only SIX DAYS before the book comes out! Today’s song is the zen-like zydeco lullaby, “When You Snooze, You Ooze.” It’s performed by the Zydeco Zebras (Zero McMillion, Watts Zuppa, and George McZee) and is found on their zippy and zestful album, ZIGZAG ZINNIA. Today’s memorabilia is a supercool poster from the Isle of Dwight Festival in 1973, in which the Zebras performed (along with a lot of other cool musical acts)…and for some reason, Zero McMillion took a bath onstage for the duration of the Zebras’ set. Apparently it was legendary! In this post: process pictures for the memorabilia—and a little sampling that shows how Scotch Removable Tape can help you with your stenciling! Plus some process pics from the Zebras’ album cover, and a little bit of sweeping up of the final detritus. You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out in SIX DAYS, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composed and arranged by Grammy-winning Kirkland Middleton (of the Lost Bayou Ramblers) Vocals, Bass Synth, T’fer: Kirkland Middleton Rubboard and Accordion: Grammy-nominated Corey Ledet (LEGENDARY!!!) Recorded/engineered by Kirkland Middleton Mastered by Will O’Brien Keep your eye out for some more goofy content here on Instagram...and THANK YOU to all the musicians and to everyone who has supported and encouraged this project every step of the way. And finally: all are invited to the official Book Launch Party on APRIL 7th at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke, VA. Hurrah! ANIMAL ALBUMS A TO Z. Copyright © 2024 by Cece Bell. Hey y’all! Only 2 (TWO!!!) Wednesdays to go—and only 13 days!—before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s song is “The Yokel Over Yonder,” and it’s sung by siblings Yvette and Yohan Yak. The Yaks’ mother, Yolanda, had a big dream in the early seventies for her children to make it big, and they did…in the Carolinas, at least. This song is from their most joyful album, YODELAY-YOO-HOO. Today’s memorabilia is a groovy embroidered patch that my sister gave to me for my birthday when we were kids! Our mom would sew patches like this one onto our fraying jeans. I’m lucky to have this one still in its original packaging. Also in this post: Process pictures for the album art. You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composed, arranged, and performed by Robert and Kristen Smith Vocals: Kristen Smith, Robert Smith, and Will O’Brien Guitar: Robert Smith Engineered and mastered by Will O’Brien Join me next week for the final sneak peek: a zen-like lullaby from the Zydeco Zebras! And remember: all are invited to the official Book Launch Party on APRIL 7th at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke, VA. YAHOO! ANIMAL ALBUMS A TO Z. Copyright © 2024 by Cece Bell. Hey y’all! Only 3 (THREE!!!) Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s most X-cellent song is “Use Your Inside Vox,” performed by Xavier Xoloitzcuintli, Mexico’s favorite (and only) hairless canine xylophonist! This charming song is from Xavier’s 1968 album, XOXO, XAVIER, and was written for his pups, when they were young and boisterous. (Anyone who can properly pronounce “Xoloitzcuintli,” you have my utmost respect. Please fill me in.) Today’s memorabilia is a poster from the International Percussion Festival in Xanxerê, Brazil, which Xavier headlined in 1970. This is a treasured gift from my Uncle Wallace, who attended the festival and bought this poster for my mother to mark my upcoming birth later that same year. In this post: process pictures for the memorabilia and for Xavier’s album cover, too! You’ll be able to hear this song in it’s entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composed and arranged by Robert Sanderl Vocals: Mark Cannistraci Xylophone: Robert Sanderl Engineered by Robert Sanderl and Will O’Brien Mastered by Will O’Brien Join me next week for a yee-haw whimmydiddle of a good time, with the youthful yodeling yawps of Yohan and Yvette Yak…and there will probably be a new CCTV music video coming soon, too! Don’t forget: all are welcome to attend the official Book Launch Party at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke, VA. YAHOO! ANIMAL ALBUMS A TO Z. Copyright © 2024 by Cece Bell. Hey y’all! “Wednesday” starts with W, and there are only 4 Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s wholesome tune is brought to you by the winsome Weasella “Weazelle” Donahue and her back-up trio, Walt Russ, Wilma Wombat, and Ward Hogg. It’s called “Whoa, That Weevil Is Weird” and it’s on one of my favorite albums of all time, THE MOST WONDERFUL WESTERN SWING WHATSOEVER, produced by the White Wheat Studios in Wheeling, West Virginia. Today’s memorabilia is a bumper sticker that Tom and I purchased at the gift shop at the Country Music Wax Museum in Nashville, TN. (If you’ve never been, you should go. It’s wild.) I’ve never had the heart to put the sticker on our car, so it takes up a prime piece of real estate on our refrigerator instead. (Another great tourist stop is Weazelle’s World, also in Tennessee…it’s a successful rodeo dinner theater, featuring delicious fried chicken, green beans with fatback, and yellow cling peaches topped with cottage cheese, all for just $14.99. Highly recommended!) In this post: process pictures for the memorabilia, Weazelle’s album cover, and a little bit of the book jacket, too! You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composed by Ralph Berrier, Jr. Engineered and mastered by Will O’Brien Vocals: Melody Vernon Irby and Ralph Berrier, Jr. Fiddle: Ralph Berrier, Jr. Guitar: Steve Paul Mandolin: Matt Livingston Join me next week for some X-cellent xylophone music from the one and only Xavier Xoloitzcuintli, a Mexican hairless dog with more talent in his paw than I’ll ever have in my whole life! Hey y’all! Only 5 (FIVE!!!) Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s vivacious song is the Vampire Bat Vaudeville Revue (Vince Valentine, Varian Boggle, Jack Varnette, Bug Van Mudder, and Flip Avery) and features vibrant vocals by the most venerated vuvuzela player of all, Miss Veronica Vole! It’s called “Eat Your Vittles, Vivian,” and harks back to a more troubled time in Miss Veronica’s life, when she was the nanny for a family of unruly bats. Today’s memorabilia is the original sheet music for the song, circa 1941. My dad used to go to a lot of auctions, and this was in one of those “mystery boxes” that were irresistible to Dr. Bell in the olden days… Also in this post: process pictures from the artwork for the album cover for the letter V! You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Hey y’all! Only 7 (SEVEN!!!) Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s song is “Teeny Tiny Teacup Toad” by that terpsichorean twister, Mr. Tubby Tapir, himself! It’s from his terrific 1964 album, LET’S TWIST TOMORROW AND TUESDAY TOO.” Today’s memorabilia is a ticket from Tubby’s show in Thimble, Tennessee (1965). It’s on loan from Madge Rosenberg (@madelynrosenbergwrites), who discovered Tubby and is now his official biographer. I’ll be posting an excerpt from Rosenberg’s 1982 TUBBY T AND ME in a separate post later today! Also featured: process art for the album art. You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Hey y’all! Only 8 Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s song comes to you straight from the sunny shores of Southern California: “Sometimes the Soup is Salty,” by the legendary Sensational Sloth Boys! You can enjoy the sweet melodies of brothers Sam, Syd, and Slocum Slothum, along with their cousins, George Fancy and Bug Smith, on their album SLOW SURFIN’ ’67. Today’s memorabilia is a concert poster for the Sloth Boys’ unforgettable set at the San Francisco Sunset Theatre in 1969. By the time this concert took place, Sam and Syd, once inseparable, were barely speaking. But based on the tightness of their harmonies, not one person in that massive crowd could have guessed just how deep the rift really was. I found this poster at Goodwill. For reals! Also featured: process art for the poster, a few sneak peeks of the album art, and some pictures of props for a music video I’m making for this song. (The sloths don’t have faces yet ’cuz those’ll be animated in, I hope!) You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composer/Arranger/Engineer/Everything Else: Michael Andrews! (Mike did the music for the El Deafo TV show on Apple TV, and he scored Bridesmaids and Donnie Darko and my very favorite TV show ever, Freaks and Geeks…and a whole ton of other stuff! He’s amazing!) Join me next week for a twisty tune from the one and only Tubby Tapir! ANIMAL ALBUMS A TO Z. Copyright © 2024 by Cece Bell. Hey y’all! Only 9 Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! ROCK ’N’ ROLL, baby! Literally! Because today’s song is the rambunctious “Rhapsody for a Rogue Rodent” by Rascal Ratt and the Rockabilly Rabbits. Woo! Do you remember Teen Beat and Tiger Beat? Well, before those glossy tabloids captivated youngsters everywhere, there was today’s featured memorabilia: the 1950s periodical Rock ’N’ Roll Rendezvous. I borrowed this 1956 winter edition (featuring Rascal and a host of other performers who are now forgotten) from a Rascal Ratt super fan, the fabulous illustrator, LeUyen Pham (@uyenloseordraw). (LeUyen’s pet rabbit is the great nephew of the band’s saxophonist, Ed Pham, and so LeUyen is an avid collector of all things Rascal.) LeUyen would not part with the magazine, but has graciously allowed me to share it with you here. Also featured: a few sneak peeks of the album art, and a few process pictures, too. You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo! Lyrics: Cece Bell Composer/Arranger/Engineer: Edgar Crockett Drums, Lead Vocals: Manuel Lopez III Piano: Corey Kendrick Guitar: Steve Grismore Bass: Ron Wilson Tenor Saxophone: Peter Hart Background Vocals: Edgar Crockett Join me next week for the soaring harmonies of California’s own Sensational Sloth Boys! Hey y’all! Volume up! Only 10 Wednesdays to go before ANIMAL ALBUMS FROM A TO Z comes out! Today’s song is “You’re Not Quite Qualified,” by cellist Sue Quesenberry, bassist William “Puddin’” Quackenbush, and violinists Bud Glover and Quigley Pitt of the Quintessential Quokka String Quartet. (Quokkas are the most adorable animals in the world, and they usually live in Australia, but these four cuties made it big in Philadelphia. Go figure.) This song is called “You’re Not Quite Qualified,” and features some rather stern narration by Sue. It’s from their fifteenth studio album, QUICKSTEPS AND QUADRILLES. Today’s memorabilia is the cassette tape version of this album. What a find! And at our local QwikPick, no less! Also featured: a few sneak peeks of the album art, and a few process pictures, too. You’ll be able to hear this song in its entirety—plus 25 other silly songs—when ANIMAL ALBUMS comes out on March 26, via a QR code linked to the book. Woo!
