1979 I painted this 22”x30” watercolor after returning from Monument Valley where I saw these mustangs running at night. It’s been a theme of mine ever since. Leslie Levy Gallery published a poster of this in 1986. by @walkercreativeone

This is the large (for location painting) oil at Oak Creek Canyon I made a trade at Oak Creek Cottage Resort to stay any time I want during off season free. They had this hanging in their foyer last time I was there. I bring these spontaneous, impasto, bravura brushed study back to the lodge-prop it up without looking at it. Take a quick shower, settle in with a vodka & soda…palette and brushes there…then observe it. That’s always a surprise. Because I have to pull it together. I wonder if other artists have to do this. It takes observing, adding, subtracting, smear here, dab there, accents dimmed or noted, tonal adjustments, getting acquainted with and then finishing what I just created rather intuitively from overwhelming nature. by @walkercreativeone

Painting a 30”x40” oil, Oak Creek Canyon.
I made a trade for free lodging anytime I come in “off season” at a lodge on the main road along this tributary trout stream. Great fun to drive when no traffic on the switchbacks, winding on Arizona State Route 89A, but can’t accelerate as wildlife can be just around the curve, late at night. I haul my (heavy for me) gear, easel and large canvas down the slope to the river. It’s getting back up through the low hanging foliage that’s the trick. by @walkercreativeone
