I wanted to evoke warmth, family and heritage in this collaboration with West Elm, which pays homage to my African ancestors as well as my wife and business partner DiDi’s Brazilian roots. This piece always pulls me right back into summer.

The kind of summer where the air is warm before you even step outside, where the ocean feels alive, and every wave carries a little bit of freedom with it. I remember standing at the shoreline, watching the water roll in with that perfect rhythm, powerful but calming at the same time. That contrast is what I wanted to capture here.

I wasn’t trying to paint a wave. I was trying to paint a feeling. Movement, energy, and that split second when everything slows down and you just take it in. The color, the sound, the texture of the water. It is all there if you have ever spent time near the ocean.

This piece has lived with me for a while now, and every time I come back to it, it feels like stepping into a memory. Not loud, not forced. Just real.

If you have ever stood at the edge of the water in the middle of summer and felt completely present, you already understand this piece.
