I remember in season two walking through the doors with my coach, Stephen who was making his “retirement run” at one last run at the game before he threw himself into his gym and family. A lot of us in the jiu jitsu scene at that time had come from the combat sports arena where through promise of glory or whatever crock of shit they’d sold us on we were head first into being the best gladiators they could ask for. For me and many others the idea was get in the thick of it as often as you can for experience, CTE? Never heard of her. Walking into season 2 immediately everything was different. Brandon gave everyone huge hugs as we walked in and we all stood there and talked about how fun it was about to be. For the next 7 seasons we poured everything into this. This was different, the idea itself was the first time anyone was trying to make a pathway to be an actual professional in a sport full of delinquent prize fighters. Fast forward through those seasons, every season we watched the human story of the struggle to be “great” in a game we made up to make the art of jiu jitsu fun to watch. It’s crazy to watch, people plant flags, create camps, create their own reality within this thing. Friends are made, enemies are made and people are dead set on their sides. I guess some of that is sports. The way I found my way into season three was one of the most unique experiences that is special to the show. We have qualifiers but those qualifiers have never been a gate. They have been a way to display the scene, the talent and for there to be a growing community exposed to the ruleset. Everyone who’s shown up for 9 seasons have all been there for the same reason to move this wave forward. I hope as we grow and new generations come in they remember or think to ask why we all supported this.
