It's the end of August & I'm dusting off my cookbooks in excitement for autumn colors & flavors-I spend a lot of time in the company of books & this fall, I'm challenging myself to make one new recipe a week from a cookbook. Yes, the tangible heft of a book, the dog-eared stain page of a coveted favorite to even a broken spine from so much loved Six Seasons.

What are your fall favorite soups, dinners or sides?
What cookbook says autumnal tastes & textures to you?

I've been going on a lot of dark lit walks with Eddy. Early morning chill under bright cold stars. Sometimes I tell Eddy what's on my mind-the unedited version. The way I used to tell Alison Cady-my childhood bestie everything on the school bus-winding through cherry orchards, dunes, youth-filled doldrums play by plays of the day all along the backdrop of blue hues of Lake Michigan.

But this cold Monday in Missoula, walking in my pajamas under a down jacket-I said,to Eddy at the end of our walk, "Thanks Buddy, I so appreciate you."
Six simple words to re-calibrate the mood.

It's why I write poetry-to let the air in. A good poem opens the window. A needed poem is a tender friend, listening.

This past Christmas @scadymorris sent me the sweetest
"Hey, Buddy-I so appreciate you."
gift-a photo from a sunny August day on Lake Michigan. Sarah, Alison Cady's little sister & my forever friend, drove out to sit with my family & just be-together, again.

And so-here we are at the end of January beginning again, yet a heaviness within.

During these heavy times, may we keep showing up in the tender tough ways of friendship. Give someone your time-call on the phone or go for a walk and say, "hey, buddy-I so appreciate you."
Even if it's your dog-trust me, they're listening.

Winter is our summer/our time to be out & about in as much quiet as possible.

Sure, it's easy to hate Snowbowl-it's easy to hate a lot of things. And yet, if you spend enough time with ravens at play & going your own way and hunting lines or as Nina calls her favorite wooded run, pancakes-you'll probably find something beautiful, something you need. Something we all could use to help slow & quiet our minds.
And don't get me wrong, I went inside to ask if the tow rope was going to run-but I asked Brad, with eye contact and kindness.
Not because I'm midWest nice.
Nope--I'm not afraid to be kind-look people in the eye and ask for what I want. And what have I found in these 51 years of practice? You usually get what you need-it's just the tone that you have to practice-

Happy Solstice-
Be the light you need-now.

We're two weeks in with Eddy-
He's been the best present in staying present.
I've been making art a lot, writing more & getting ready to launch a project & just staying present for all the mess & meaning in the hard work of a creative life.
I've said it before: I don't romanticize farmers, artists or revolutionaries-it often hard thankless work-
But this is what I do know:
For directions, don't follow your ego. Watch crows, spend more time outside with dogs, trust the words of kids-

Eddy helps me Eddy out and just breathe-
There truly is the power of a dog.

Welcome-
This is Eddy Lucky Schmalenberg the First.
Our first family dog-my first pet in a long time.
Gary Snyder taught me in Deep Ecology that comparisons are odious. I couldn't agree more.

Eddy hails from CA-yet thanks to so many good people- he & his sister were rescued & found a home in Thompson Falls & thanks to my husband, who monitors for snow like we've been hoping after hope for a dog.
