They responded to my thumb and offered me a lift. Everyone was dressed in thick black rubber. It was suggested I get in the back with the masks, oxygen tanks and flippers. As we road along I asked, “why they are you Scuba diving around here?”“ Because of the funky, coloured weed man”, they all replied in unison. Fragment 98. This is based on a real experience after I had delivered Tish’s bike to a derelict Cottars cottage in County Cork in 1975. I was hitchhiking to spend time with some ‘alternative life style’ friends in Cod’s Head when I was offered a lift by a group of Scuba divers! They dropped me off after passing through a ‘gorge’ and I walked down a road through fields with peat stacks either side towards Allihies. There were men with scythes cutting wheat and making hay riches in bright sunlight. I felt ( even then ) that I had stepped back in time into a lost valley. He found it in a bag in the shed. It was one of those with an uncertain future. Two days later he decided to hang it on his wall with another earlier one. When his surveyor friend, who had studied mathematics and was obsessed with dimensions , stood in front of it asked , “ how big is it and how far apart are they? “Oh it’s Fu-knose. It’s an old Norse word. It refers to the sort of stuff the Berserkers used to find under their tallboys where they used to keep their helmets and swords. I think it was part of a Viking secret code like knives, knots and knitting where the K is silent. Sort of hidden. He stood motionless in front of my abstract painting in his police uniform.
