When you break a tap deep in an expensive engine block, what do you do?

Foreman Brandon Demers of Rush Truck Centres faced that dilemma when a tech on his team broke an 18mm, 4-flute tap in a deep hole in a diesel engine block. The top of the tap sat 2-5/8” below the surface — too far to easily reach with the length of our Tap Extractor’s fingers.

When Demers contacted us for advice, we suggested removing the sleeve from the Extractor, or even cutting it in half, to give the tool a bit more reach and give them a fighting chance. Less than 24 hours later, we were excited to hear how they made out.

“I just wanted to thank you for making a great tool that got the job done and saved an expensive diesel engine. One of our techs used poor judgment and ran a cylinder head bolt hole tap down into the engine block with an impact gun. Naturally, it bottomed out and broke deep inside. With the use of your tool — and some helpful advice — we were successful in the extraction of the broken tap!”

Bent or broke a finger on your Tap Extractor? Don't throw out the tool — they're simple to replace! Simply slide off the sleeve, replace the finger, and slide the sleeve back on. Replacement fingers are specific to each tool (size and number of flutes), and they are available in packages of 12 from our authorized distributors. by @waltontools

If you need to quickly remove a nipple in tight quarters, you can count on REPS to get the job done. Here we remove a piece of old 3/4” black pipe from a 45 up against a wall.

Breaking a tap in a screw hole doesn’t have to ruin your day — if you have the right tool on hand to get it out!

Here, a boat mechanic was conducting off-season zinc anode replacement when his tap snapped off in the 65-foot aluminum craft. That day, his set of Walton Tap Extractors saved what could have been hundreds of dollars in extraction and repair costs.

First, the mechanic cleaned out the excess material in and around the hole with compressed air. Since aluminum is a soft, sticky metal that tends to grab when tapping holes and removing a broken tap, he next placed a few drops of cutting oil on the broken tap. He then inserted the Extractor's fingers into the flutes of the broken tap, attached a tap wrench to the Extractor's end (Step 1), and turned the wrench. Finally, the broken piece came right out (Step 2) and he was able to install the new zinc (Step 3).

"Breaking things is unfortunately just a part of working on cars but with experience comes the ability to reduce those situations.

But what’s worse than that is not being able to fix what you break efficiently. A few years ago an old coworker recommended these tap extractors from Walton Tools and they have saved my butt plenty of times now."

Do you need the biggest, baddest broken pipe extractors available? Our "REPS" pipe, stud and screw extractors are available for pipes up to 2", and studs/screws up to 3-1/2"!

Made in the USA since 1908! Those in the know have turned to Walton to remove broken taps for more than a century.

We recently dug up this trade show display from the 1960s. It criss-crossed the country year after year introducing America to the Walton Tap Extractor.

These tools are as solid as the day they were manufactured and would be ready to jump right back into action decades later.

When you’ve got to tap in a tough spot, don’t break the bank for a special long-reach tap — reach for an Extension that you’ll use over and over!
