Van build 2.0 - it’s time for a change!

It’s been a year since we picked up our converted van and we’ve had some brilliant adventures, but we’ve made the decision to rip out the conversion and start again.

Cracks started to show in the original van conversion and as we’ve stripped it out, we’ve uncovered lots of issues. In a strange way this feels like a relief, as we know we’ve made the right decision, but to be honest, we still both feel quite daunted by the work ahead .

We’ve got lots to share on the process of ripping out the conversion, the issues we’ve found and the plans we have for the new layout, so please do stick around for the journey.

Wonderful day at @cabillacornwall supporting @plant_one_cic on our team volunteering day. Learning about a temperate rainforest on our doorstep and supporting with weeding the thousands of trees they have planted at this site.

Lucky to work for a company that offers us the chance to volunteer within work time to support local causes and no better way to start the week than with a day outside 💚.

One of our favourite adventures we took our Caddy on was a little long weekend in the Brecon Beacons. It was a couple of months before we sold it and at the time we were starting to think about upgrading, but still loved this trip as the weather was really on our side. Trips in the Caddy always felt easier when the sun shone!

It was a sun filled weekend of hiking, waterfall swims and gorgeous mountain view’s from our micro camper.

Autumn is that you? 🍂

All of a sudden we’ve gone from endless days of sunshine to needing to pack that extra waterproof layer. Grey and drizzly days in Cornwall are still beautiful though, you just need to be prepared!

Sound deadening, insulation and fiddly jobs - its part 3 of our van build diaries.

Key jobs for this phase included:

✔️ Buying the large van sound deadening and insulation pack from @combe_valley_campers to get us started.

✔️ Sound deadening using the @dodomatuk Deadn Hex sheets - across the van walls, wheel arches and roof.

✔️ Lined the roof and wall panels with the @dodomatuk Thermo Liner for an extra layer of cosiness. The previous conversion didn’t have any sound deadening or extra insulation layers so hoping this will make a real difference.

✔️ Filling the floor ridges with insulation strips and covering this with the @dodomatuk Deadn Duo pro - which combines sound deadening and insulation. Again, the previous conversion had no extra lining on the floor (just a sheet of wood on the bare metal), so this should add a much needed extra layer.

✔️ Used @dodomatuk Thermofleece on the walls and in the cavities for a final layer of insulation.

The van is definitely starting to feel like it’s starting to take shape, we obviously have so much more to do and this is just the start, but feels less like a tin can and more like the start of a new home on wheels.

Part 4 - including starting to work with carpet and a side door side quest coming up!

FINALLY made it for a swim at a local river - a quick little dip to break up a walk through the woods.

This was last weekend, and I think we were holding onto the last few days of summer, it feels like autumn is finally here now. We’ll be trying to fit in every opportunity for a swim where we can before the swims start to get a lot colder! ✨

It’s been a year since we went on our epic NE250 road trip and I wanted to share some of our favourite moments.

We’ve been working on the van since May so it feels a little strange not to be sharing any trips this year, but looking back through this trip has got me so excited for getting back out in the van again… just not just yet!

It’s part 3 of our van build diaries and finally time to start putting things back in after what feels like months of stripping things out!

We’ve used a combination of @dodomatuk products from @combe_valley_campers for this, starting off with the Deadn Hex sound deadening for the wall panels and the roof to really reduce the noise in the van - after driving around in what was effectively a empty metal box, it was amazing the difference that this made instantly.

We then used the Dodo Thermoliner for insulation on the walls and roof, with the thermo fleece on top of this for an added layer of insulation.

We then turned our attention to the floor and used insulation strips between the floor ridges, with a layer of the very sticker Dodo DeadnPro over the top to act as a final layer of insulation and sound deadening in one.

As I’m taking the van to a festival, I didn’t fancy messing up a new wooden floor so we’ve popped the old one back in for now and will replace this when we pick up the build again post-festival.

Part 4 coming up next and we’re off on a side quest!

What a wonderful summer.

With the van currently being converted, summer looked a little different for us, lots of little adventures closer to home and more hours than we’d care to count spent working in a metal box during several heatwaves 🥵.

A lovely little evening exploring a corner of Cornwall I’m surprised to say I’ve never visited and making the most of the Cornish sunshine while it lasts.

Jumping in the sea after a hot day in the office was the perfect start and then we made our way down into Portscatho for possibly the best loaded fries I’ve ever eaten!
