A large team of healthcare professionals and volunteers descended on Prince George’s Community College to provide free medical check-ups, dental services, eye exams and eyewear to anyone in need of the services.

This was part of a Remote Area Medical (RAM) event – a nonprofit that has been setting up free pop-up clinics around the country for decades.

For information on their latest pop up in Takoma Park, Md., visit www.ramusa.org

A federal judge has ordered testimony from two high-level officials with the Interior Department over the recent abrupt removal of trees from D.C.’s historic East Potomac Golf Links.

The judge plans to hold another hearing Oct. 19. She has ordered testimony from Greg Wischer, deputy chief of staff at the Interior Department, and Jessica Bowron, acting director of the National Park Service.

The Trump administration was sued earlier this year for plans to renovate the golf course. It was ordered in court to give advance notice to plaintiffs before drastic actions like clearing trees.

But over the holiday weekend, the administration abruptly cut down more than 400 trees with less than a day’s notice.

The clearings prompted an emergency hearing Monday. U.S. District Court Judge Ana Reyes said the administration had lost “all its credibility.”

A government lawyer said they did their best to “give notice.”

D.C. is legally required to make shelter available for anyone who needs it to protect them from the cold during hypothermia season, which starts in November. But people still sleep outside, even as the city expands its shelter capacity, and for those both in and outside of shelter, winter poses heightened health risks. by @wamu885

Veterans groups and preservationists are protesting how President Trump's proposed triumphal arch would impact the character of the monuments in D.C. A third group is now raising concerns: aviation experts, who are worried about the impact the 250-foot arch would have on the airspace around National Airport

NPR's Rachel Treisman has been looking into their concerns. She joins WAMU to share her findings by @wamu885

WMATA is proposing an inflation-based fare increase of 11.1%. If passed, that means the minimum cost of riding Metro would go up by 25 cents.

Raising fares could bring in 40 to 45 million dollars in revenue, according to the transit agency's estimates. However, the fare hikes could cause riders to take around 8 million fewer trips.

Metro is also proposing a plan to expand its program giving free fares to kids 5-18 in Maryland and Virginia. D.C. kids already ride free.

The Metro Board of Directors is expected to schedule a public hearing on the proposed rate hikes. by @wamu885
