TODAY, Oct 1, at 5:30pm: Artist Talk: Morgan

Clarence “Morgan” Morgan is an American abstract painter whose work spans painting, drawing, printmaking, and an ongoing reflective writing practice. Rooted in gesture, intuition, and process, his work explores shifting relationships between order and improvisation. Through pattern, repetition, and fluid mark-making, he examines perceptual experience and the ways visual systems echo larger questions of time, space, and the natural and cosmic world. His parallel writing practice—composed of notes, essays, and studio reflections—further articulates the metaphysical and perceptual concerns that inform his visual work.

This fall, Morgan is spending time on the UNCG campus as part of the School of Art’s Falk Visiting Artist Program, as well as presenting his work in the Weatherspoon’s Art on Paper exhibition.

This talk is supported by the UNCG School of Art’s Falk Visiting Artist Program and UNCG’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and is presented as part of the University Concert and Lecture Series.

Opening today! Art on Paper 2026: The 48th Exhibition, August 29, 2026 – Spring 2027

Art on Paper 2026: The 48th Exhibition is open! The artists featured in this group exhibition demonstrate myriad ways in which the humble medium of paper is elevated to extraordinary ends. From a cityscape built with discarded lottery tickets, to Medieval-inspired molded paper armor, to exploring the anatomy of insects through cuts and folds. Simultaneously, the artists use those forms to explore a rich array of topics—from traditional crafts to contemporary foodways, from comedic situations to the weight of grief, and from the built environment to the natural world.

Curated by Dr. Emily Stamey, Elizabeth McIver Weatherspoon Curator of Academic Programming and Head of Exhibitions

Continue reading the press release on our website (link in bio) and come see the exhibition!

The Weatherspoon is open on Saturdays from 10am-5pm. Entrance and parking are free.

Opening today!
Body and Soul, Humanist Visual Languages
August 15, 2026 – February 13, 2027

"Body and Soul, Humanist Visual Languages" explores the ways art can communicate experiences—both tangible and intangible. Through their choice of subject matter, technique, and style, artists create visual languages that describe the world around us while also reaching inward, offering insight into our emotional and psychological states. In doing so, they open spaces for reflection, empathy, and dialogue, allowing individuals to see their own experiences in relation to those of others.

Organized by Elaine D. Gustafson, Curator of Collections and Head of Facilities at the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

Museum hours:
Tuesdays - Saturdays: 10am - 5pm
Thursdays: 10am - 8pm
*Free and open to the public*

Last month, Weatherspoon docents and members of our Collectors and Curators Circle traveled to Boone and Blowing Rock for guided tours of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University and the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. At the Turchin Center, co-curators Gale Greenlee (also Weatherspoon docent!) and shauna caldwell led us through their exhibition "belonging to place: The Creative Community and Artistic Legacy of bell hooks."

At BRAHM, we were treated to a tour of "Field Studies: Ways of Knowing Place in Southern Appalachia" by co-curators Jennie Carlisle and Ian Gabriel Wilson-Rhodes.

Our gratitude to all for participating, sharing their knowledge, and hosting us so graciously.

Slide one: Gale Greenlee, PhD, WAM docent and exhibition co-curator, talks to attendees about the background of the "belonging to place" exhibition.

Slide two: Ian Gabriel Wilson-Rhodes, BRAHM’s Curator of Exhibitions & Collections, shares about the "Field Studies" exhibition.

Slide three: Artist, professor, and friend of the Weatherspoon Jody Servon talks to attendees about her work in the "Field Studies" exhibition.

Slide four: Trip participants take a photo at the home of Molly and Jeb Burns who generously opened their doors to our group for a lunch break in Blowing Rock.

Today, on what would have been Betye Saar’s 100th birthday, we send our condolences for her recent passing to her family and friends. Betye Saar (July 30, 1926 – July 26, 2026), contemporary artist and a foundational figure in the Black Arts Movement, left a lasting artistic and personal legacy. The Weatherspoon's collection includes two of her works, including the one pictured here, To the Manor Born, 2011. Saar used mixed media assemblage to create art that explores important questions of our time regarding race, gender, and religious identities. The work is consistently exhibited at the museum and used for teaching at UNCG, and we will continue to celebrate her through her work.
