We started discussing and researching potentially burning the willow last spring.After extensive online research and discussion with other weavers and growers, we still couldn’t find anyone who had successfully burned cultivated varieties. Though I did find some graduate research papers about Indigenous peoples burning native willow varieties. One widely respected authority cautioned that cultivated varieties often have a higher water content and that native varieties have been adapted to fire. Obviously, I felt some hesitancy. We are so grateful to see that every variety has sprouted! We burned in January when the plants were dormant. Benefits of low intensity fire are nutrient cycling, reduction of pest pressure and fungal disease.
