I thought I was coming back to admire the architecture. Instead, I left with a deeper appreciation for the history. Twenty-two years changed how I saw the Mezquita.

And honestly… it became the highlight of my entire Spain trip.

Today I stood at one of the most important gateways in Spanish history.

Looking across the Strait of Gibraltar, Africa is close enough to see with your own eyes. It’s hard to believe that in AD 711, an army crossed this narrow stretch of water and changed Spain forever.

Nearly 800 years of Moorish influence shaped Spain’s architecture, food, language, science, and culture, and seeing where it all began made everything I had seen throughout Andalucía make so much more sense.

History feels different when you’re standing where it actually happened.
