हर घर कुछ कहता है…

Some houses are built with stone, timber and mud. Others are built with memories. This is one such house.

In my village of Bhagoti, Uttarakhand, this ancestral home has quietly held generations of our family. My grandfather, Mr. Narain Singh Negi, who would have been around 120 years today, was born here and married in this very courtyard. My father too was born on the first floor of this beautiful house.

As a little schoolgirl, I remember a tiger peeping through one of the ground-floor windows. The whole village came running with torches and firesticks to scare it away. Today, that memory feels like a story from another time — when the forest came right to our doorstep and a village came together to protect its own.

Just a few feet behind the house, a waterfall still turns a water mill that has been making mustard oil for almost a century. And when I return to London, I carry little treasures from this region with me — mandua, jhingora, mustard oil, jakhya — simple things that somehow carry the taste, fragrance and soul of home.

They are not just food. They are memories of mountain kitchens, old courtyards, family gatherings and a way of life slowly disappearing.

I am deeply grateful to my extended family, who have built modern homes nearby and moved with the times, yet have chosen to preserve this ancestral home and its heritage.

Because preserving an old house is not merely preserving walls and a roof.

It is preserving all the stories etched into its walls.

Har ghar kuch kehta hai.
But some houses tell the story of an entire family.

From Bhagoti to London, I carry those stories with me — with gratitude, love and a deep sense of belonging.

Some inherit land.
Some inherit houses.
I have inherited stories.
