If you want a clear counter, don’t just dump everything on it when you come home.

Instead here’s what I’d do:

Step 1: choose a convenient spot that is not too far from the counter (where I want to put my stuff down)

Step 2: get a basket, tray, bin, or box to put items in (it doesn’t need to be pretty, we’re just testing it out first)

Step 3: walk past the counter the next time I get home and put stuff in the container from step 2

Step 4: spend a few minutes that evening putting things in the container away

Step 5: walk past your clear counter and smile at how simple that was.

Changing your home doesn’t have to be hard and you can have a tidy home in just minutes a day.

I help busy families do just that.

I got sick of being the only one keeping track of the chores and tidying up the house so I had my husband build me an app!

It’s called Tindy and now I’m

- No longer the keeper of lists
- No longer the nag of the house
- No longer overwhelmed
- No longer cleaning on my own

The house is cleaner.

Things are tidier.

We are happier and spending more time together as a family.

All because of one tiny app that lets me offload my brain.

The secret to my tidy house isn’t that it’s always clean.

It’s a quick reset every night.

Just a few minutes, and the house goes from “what happened in here?!” to “ahh, that’s better.”

Here’s the embarrassing part: I kept forgetting to do it.

I loved the result.
I knew it was only 10 minutes away.
And the evening still got away from me every single time.

So I asked my husband to build me an app.
(He builds apps for a living, so he said yes.)

We named it Tindy. Tiny + Tidy.

✅ Every night it reminds you to do a Lightning Tidy.
✅ It runs a timer so “10 minutes” actually means 10 minutes.
✅ It snaps a before and after so you can SEE the difference.
✅ Once a week, it nudges you into a deeper 30-minute declutter.

But my favorite part?

It reminds the whole family to jump in. 🎉

I’m not the one holding it in my head anymore.
I’m not the one asking everyone to help. Again.
Tindy asks for me.

If you’re the default keeper of the house, you know exactly how big that is.

I didn’t mean to ruffle feathers with this episode, but I did.

We are unpacking and decluttering 3 different ways in our home as we just moved.

I’m doing The Packing Party method from The Minimalists.

But, I said I do not consider myself a minimalist, even though we have a lot less stuff than many people.

I said I was going to keep sentimental things and that’s why I’m not a minimalist, but it’s really because I do not want to put the pressure on myself to reach the standards of The Minimalists.

What do you think? Where does the line for minimalism actually land?

What if the clutter in your home is costing you more than just space?

That pile of papers you see every time you walk into the kitchen. The closet you keep meaning to clean out. The drawer where you can never find what you need. The sentimental stuff you don’t really want—but feel guilty getting rid of.

All of it can add to the mental load you’re already carrying.

And if you’re a busy mom, the solution probably isn’t another complicated organizing system or an entire Saturday spent cleaning out the garage.

In this episode of The Secrets of Supermom Show, I’m talking with Deanna Yates, recovering perfectionist, busy mom, and host of the top-ranked Wannabe Clutter Free podcast, about a completely different approach to decluttering.

Day 11 of 20 of decluttering before moving.

I’m in our entryway today and I’m letting go of things we just don’t use.

I had great aspirations for this stuff, but alas the idea in my head was better than the everyday reality of life.

Day 1 (clothes and shoes): 28 things
Day 2 (bathroom): 33 things
Day 3 (personal clothing): 22 things
Day 4 (bedroom wrap up): 22 things
Day 5 (“library”): 19 things
Day 6 (kitchen): 33 things
Day 7 (crafts): 28 things
Day 8 (garage): 40 things
Day 9 (garage): 16 things
Day 10 (office): 15 things
Day 11 (entryway): 16 things

Total so far = 272 things (228 to go)
* Clearly I’m not doing the math right on camera 🤣

We’re halfway through my decluttering challenge of simplifying before we move.

Let’s check in and get the stuff out.

Total so far = 256 things

Today I’m showing you my sell pile (we still have time before we move), my Buy Nothing Group or donate pile, a tiny pile of things to use up or replace in this house, and my recycle and trash pile.

Normally, I try to donate as I declutter, but this is a big challenge for me (I’m trying to see if I can get to 500 things) and I want to show you the big piles and payoff.

But, the piles in my living room are making me a bit batty so I figured the halfway point was a good time to check in, show you the progress, and get things out.

How long does it take you to get the piles out of your home?

Day 10 of 20 of trying to declutter 500 things in order to radically simplify my stuff before moving.

We’re in my “office” today.

Not too much here as I try to keep this pretty clean and I organized this space recently.

But in the spirit of radical simplicity I did choose to let go of a couple things that were more nice to haves that I didn’t really love.

Day 1 (clothes and shoes): 28 things
Day 2 (bathroom): 33 things
Day 3 (personal clothing): 22 things
Day 4 (bedroom wrap up): 22 things
Day 5 (“library”): 19 things
Day 6 (kitchen): 33 things
Day 7 (crafts): 28 things
Day 8 (garage): 40 things
Day 9 (garage): 16 things
Day 10 (office): 15 things

Total so far = 256 things (244 to go)

Officially past the 1/2 way point in both days and stuff.
