Meet Warith Taha, one of the inaugural artists in Art + Waterโ€™s 2027 Cohort. An Oakland-based interdisciplinary artist, Warithโ€™s practice is rooted in painting while extending into writing, photography, sculpture, and research. Through processes of staining, cutting, layering, and reassembling, his work explores abstraction, Black queer subjectivity, memory, and material transformation, allowing paintings to evolve through time, experimentation, and lived experience.

โ€œMy family is from the Fillmore in San Francisco, and my relationship to the Bay is central to both my identity and my work. The people, history, and physical landscape continually shape the stories I want to tell. Because I work with found objects, the Bay Area also materially influences my practice. The city itself becomes part of the work. While itโ€™s increasingly difficult to sustain an artistic career here, and many talented artists leave for places like Los Angeles or New York, I want to believe itโ€™s possible to build a meaningful practice in the city that raised me. Staying here feels like an act of commitment to my community, to my family, and to the belief that artists can build sustainable careers in the places that shape them.โ€

โ€œI hope to come into the Art + Water community with an open heart, ready to be vulnerable, to share generously, and to learn from others. What excites me most is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with fellow artists and faculty. Iโ€™ve come to understand that community and mentorship are essential to sustaining an artistic career, and I see Art + Water as a place where those connections can grow naturally. Iโ€™m excited to share my work with a broader audience while contributing to a community built around curiosity, generosity, and mutual support.โ€

Sharing a few pieces from a ceramic residency Iโ€™m finishing up.
Clay is a beautiful material and has a way of revealing time.
It taught me how things shift, settle, and blur between phases.

For the past six months, Iโ€™ve been the WARP Artist-in-Residence at ClayroomSF, a program that supports Bay Area Black artists in realizing a ceramic project. This Friday, September 26, join me at ClayroomSF Potrero (1431 17th Street, San Francisco, CA 94107) from 7โ€“9pm for my culminating pop-up exhibition.

The work draws inspiration from the Black ceramic funerary tradition of Memory Jugs, exploring clay as a vessel of remembrance that holds touch, objects, memories, and stories. By integrating clay into my broader material practice, the exhibition reflects on legacy, my late mother, the personal archive, and the shifting landscape of San Francisco. taken in Clayroom SF by @warithtaha
