Magical Moment with a Chestnut-backed Owlet!

During my holiday in Sri Lanka this past March, I was lucky to have the incredible KD Warnarathna Ranjith as my guide. His deep knowledge of bird behavior and patience ("ten minutes more!") made all the difference in my having the opportunity to capture this stunning sequence of a chestnut-backed Owlet!
From peeking out of its roosting tree to taking flight, the entire action lasted less than five seconds!

The Chestnut-backed Owlet (Glaucidium castanotum) is endemic to Sri Lanka. (found nowhere else in the world!

This tiny but fierce owl is mostly active at dawn and dusk, using its excellent camouflage to blend into dense forests. And despite its small size, it’s known to hunt prey nearly as big as itself—including lizards and small birds!!

The black-capped bulbul (Rubigula melanictera) is an attractive, medium-sized songbird endemic to Sri Lanka. With its distinctive black cap and vibrant yellow underparts, it typically frequents forest edges and open woodlands, where it forages on fruits, and insects.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට අවේනික කළු හිසැති කොන්ඩයා කෘමින් සහ පලතුරු වර්ග අහාරයට ගනී. ලංකාවේ බොහෝ ප්‍රදේශ වල ජීවත් වන මෙම පක්ෂියා වනාන්තර අසල ගැවසේ. සිංහරාජ වැසි වනාන්තරය අසබඩ කුඩව ප්‍රදශේයේදී ගත් චයාරූපයකි.
