Warped Hq was recently featured on @woezortv, with our founder @ob.fiifi_ and the brain behind @warpedatlas ,Oscar, sharing insights on game development and the work being done to document and strengthen Africa’s gaming ecosystem.

From the realities of building in #Ghana to the need for greater visibility, documentation, and opportunities for African game developers, the conversation highlighted why this work matters and what it will take to move the industry forward.

We’re building more than a platform. We’re documenting the people, studios, projects, and ideas shaping Africa’s game development ecosystem, one step at a time.

Thank you to @evergreen_asantewaa and Woezor TV for the conversation and for creating space for these stories.

Africa’s gaming industry is already taking shape. We’re here to make sure its stories are documented and its people are seen.

Vatar, the company behind Lagos Life, has raised a $500K angel round from Abdulhamid "AB" Hassan, co-founder and CEO of Mono, Nathan Nwachuku, co-founder and CEO of Terra Industries, and Olugbenga "GB" Agboola, co-founder and CEO of Flutterwave.

Lagos Life puts a living, playable Lagos in the browser. More than 4.5M people have played so far, and more than 1.5M play on an average day.

The funding goes into the platform and into bringing new cities online. by @warpedhq

Danfo Run by @eureka_seamless started as a simple browser game about one of Lagos’ most recognisable experiences.
Now, it’s teaming up with @chowdeck

The partnership will bring Chowdeck riders, vouchers, power-ups and Chowscore into the game, while also giving players the chance to play Danfo Run while waiting for an order.
And honestly, this is the part that gets interesting.

Games can be more than something people play. They can become spaces where brands, culture and communities interact.
Danfo Run is giving us a small glimpse of what that could look like in Nigeria.
The Nigerian game development space is evolving. We’re documenting it as it happens.

Before games lived on screens, we made them ourselves.

For many Ghanaians, Counters Ball was exactly that. Bottle caps became players, a small object became the ball, and a patch of concrete became the pitch. It was simple, accessible and endlessly competitive.

Now, Ghanaian designer and developer Bright Tsa @bskt.design @bskt.design has taken that childhood idea and reimagined it as @konk.world , a digital bottle-cap football game.
What makes KONK interesting isn't simply that a childhood game has been put on a screen. It's the idea behind the translation.
The original game worked because it turned ordinary things into a playable system. KONK takes that same principle and asks what happens when you rebuild it digitally: the bottle caps become digital players, the physical surface becomes a virtual pitch, and the flick becomes the core interaction.
It's also a small example of something important in African game development: local experiences can become game mechanics.
You don't always need to invent an unfamiliar world to make something worth playing. Sometimes the strongest starting point is something people already know, remember and understand, then finding a new way to experience it.
From bottle caps on concrete to a game you can play on a screen.
KONK is a childhood memory, translated into game development.
Play it at konk.world

Lagos Life started as a life-simulation game inspired by the everyday experience of Lagos. Now, something more interesting is happening around it.

The game has begun creating space for businesses to advertise inside its virtual city, while music can become part of the nightlife and culture of the world itself. In other words, the audience is no longer just playing inside the world. There are now opportunities for businesses, artists and other creators to enter it too.
We've seen versions of this before. Fortnite became a space for concerts and cultural moments. Roblox built entire economies around virtual experiences.

Meta spent years exploring what happens when digital worlds become places for social interaction, commerce and identity.
But Lagos Life raises a more interesting question:

What happens when those ideas are built around a world that people already recognise as their own?
A virtual Lagos can be more than a backdrop. It can become a place where people discover things, spend attention, encounter brands, hear music and participate in culture.
For African game development, that's a conversation worth having.

When does a game stop being just a game?

Lagos Life is having a moment, but the numbers are only part of the story.
Created by Nigerian developer @shalom_heyeliy Shalom Rayhamen, the life-simulation game takes inspiration from games like The Sims 3 and reimagines that experience through a distinctly Nigerian lens. From work and money to social life, entertainment and familiar Lagos spaces, the game turns everyday realities into something you can actually play.

What makes it especially interesting to us at Warped is how naturally the culture sits inside the game. Lagos isn't simply the backdrop. The places, music, humour, financial realities and everyday choices all become part of the experience.
With 1 million players reached within its first few days, Lagos Life is opening up an interesting conversation about what happens when players get to see their own world reflected back at them through games.
Congratulations to Shalom and the team behind Lagos Life on what has already been an incredible response. We're excited to see where the game goes from here, and we're glad to be documenting the journey.
This is the kind of work we want to keep paying attention to.
