The Berlin 🇩🇪 story - 2h29'33"

More than a week post Berlin and I still can't believe I can call myself a marathon runner from now on. Thanks to my job @runnerslab.be and @adidasrunning I got the opportunity to make my unexpected marathon debut. After having a disappointing WOC this chance was ideal to switch up my training a bit and focus on something totally different than running with a map in hand.

So I gave @peter.kelchtermans the "difficult" task to transform me from a "sprinter" with a max racing distance of 5km into a person who could run 42,2 km in only 9 weeks 🙈

The build was almost perfect despite being a bit 🤒 2 weeks before, spraining my ankle on the first 30k long run, struggling with fueling on the third 🤮 but with endless support by @floorgils 🚴🏼‍♀️.

Then race day came and I didn't have any reference time on a half or full marathon when I registered. I had to start in startbox C because the fastest time I could fill in was 3h15'01". Anyway it was my first marathon so the first goal was to get to the finish line and if everything went good finish sub 2h30.

I was quite calm before the start and just held myself to the 3'30"/km plan @peter.kelchtermans told me to start at, this despite having to dodge and catch a lot of people in the first half. Around km 25 was the first time in the race that I felt like I was running with people that were running the same pace. Until km 32 everything went pretty smooth. I was still on pace for 2h27' so at that point I was confident in this sub 2h30' goal.

From km 35 my calves and metatarsals were burning so I let the pace drop a bit to find some comfort. Still felt kind of smooth running towards the line to eventually finish in 2h29'33"

❌ WOC 2026 ❌

Not the World Champs I was hoping for this year.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it through the Sprint or KO qualifications. The preparation was good, the cooling strategies were on point, but on the days it mattered most, my brain just didn't cooperate. 🥲

Now it's time for some vacation, to recharge and make new plans for the future.

Excited for what's next and ready to leave this disappointment behind. 💪

World Cup individual sprint 63th - Uster 🇨🇭

Not the end of the world cup/ orienteering season I hoped to have after feeling really good in training the last couple of weeks. Bad routes and not the best legs probably due to some sickness that I started to feel before the relay yesterday led to this result.

Now time for some rest and making sure to let the body heal completely before next season 👀

EOC 2025 🇧🇪 - 38th of Europe in the individual sprint

After a year full of injuries this feels so nice. 🤩 Two months ago I just started running again, running a 3000m barely below 10', just hoping to get in a decent shape before this championship but never really felt super great. If you would have asked me back then that I believed to get in the final here I would have said no.

But thanks to hard work with physiotherapists and my physical coach @peter.kelchtermans of @atk_sportteam I slowly started to believe more in it week after week. This combined with a near perfect technical preparation with Wouter of Geel and Lier made this possible to happen!

The week started not so well with a non Qualification for the KO finals in Geel. Just not agressive enough in the start and then running past an underpass, gone was the first chance.

But then on Sunday all puzzle pieces fell together. Starting together with ride and die training partner Wouter Hus in the qualification we both ran ourselves into the final. Despite having a bloody nose in my warm up and a crash on the wet cobblestones.

The final started real bad for me with a lot of bad and suboptimal choices in the first 5 minutes of running. But the end was near perfect technically, I just didn't have the fastest legs anymore.

Big shoot-out to Wouter who ended up in a crazy 15th spot in the final. This guy deserves this. 🔥

Thank you Belgium Orienteering community for making this all possible, the atmosphere and organization where really phenomenal. 🥰

Wij vonden met moeite de start op het plannetje. Laat staan dat we aan een moordend looptempo onze weg hadden gevonden doorheen de stad. 🤯

Deze Europese toppers, waaronder Runners' lab adviseur @warre.dc en voormalig #teamrunnerslab-lid @yannickmichiels__ , hadden daar duidelijk geen problemen mee. Op de laatste dag van de @eoc2025 knalden ze erop los. 💥

Helaas namen ze geen eremetaal mee naar huis. Yannick strandde op één seconde van het podium. HEEL STRAF gelopen dus! 👏👏👏
