Trans* Soc Statement on the University of Sussex V OfS

We are very happy to see that the High Court has taken the only sensible position in relation to the Office for Students’ unprecedented action against the University of Sussex. This action was in relation to specific statements within the University’s Trans and Non-Binary inclusion policy, which the OfS decided infringed on free speech. The Court concluded that the OfS were wrong in law, ‘[misdirecting] itself on the meaning of “freedom of speech within the law” and “academic freedom”’, and that their actions were premeditated and biased. It is only thanks to the University of Sussex’s willingness and ability to stand up to this ideologically motivated bullying that the decision has been overturned.

Since the beginning, now over a year ago, we have been steadfast in making it clear that any action taken by the University of Warwick in response to this would be rushed and pre-emptive, let alone patently transphobic. Unfortunately, and in spite of this, the University of Warwick continued with changes to its Trans Inclusion Code of Conduct and other resources, the vast majority of which were solely in response to the OfS’ actions.

The only logical conclusion now is that the University of Warwick must revert these policy changes and undertake a review of any other edits made to University resources. by @warwicktranssociety

Our Open Letter to the University of Warwick 🏳️‍⚧️⚧️

Today (12th December 2025) Warwick Trans* Soc hand-delivered a letter calling on the University of Warwick to do something, anything at all, for its trans community.

We demand that the University:

- Confirm or correct (as applicable) the above information about the University’s actions and, further, confirm the University’s current position on which spaces trans people may access.

- Publicly apologise for the writing, publication, and covering-up of the changes to the Code.

- Commit to involving trans students and staff in any future changes to University policy and, further, commit to including trans students and staff in whatever form the Rainbow Taskforce’s replacement takes.

- Speak against the UK’s current policy in relation to trans rights, including joining the international community in condemning the implementation of the Cass review.

- Affirm that transphobia has no place at the University, and will not be permitted in any form.

- Publish (and keep updated) a list of the locations of accessible and gender neutral facilities on campus, noting that the online campus map now requires users to sign in.

Today I had a very small rant about how all the trans days (Coming Out Day, Trans Day of Remembrance, Trans Day of Visibility) involve marginalised people doing yet more work to draw attention to themselves in a dangerous environment for the greater good and it’s PISSING ME OFF. Those days can be (and always are, for me) scary and sad. Days to avoid social media, you know?

So I declared today, 14th October 2017, the first annual Cake For Trans Friends Day. I ended up shortening it to Trans Cake Day, which I think is also a good name.

Basically, instead of us doing all the work, people (especially cis people, I feel!) give cake to their trans friends and family to show them how appreciated they are. There’s so much anger and violence surrounding
trans people, but I think we should be celebrated and loved. We’re not just tolerable or visible, we’re awesome and beautiful and people want us in their lives (as they should!) and we work so hard to exist in and give our amazingness to this world authentically, so it’s about time people acknowledged that, don’t you think? by @warwicktranssociety
