My top 50 albums of the 1990s: 01 is Toad the Wet Sprocket, Dulcinea (1994) I considered many albums at the onset of this exercise in early February, but for me, none could unseat Dulcinea head to head. There is not a 90s album that I have listened to more consistenly—since it’s release date, up through present day—than this refined gem. Toad has many well known songs released before and after this album. This album is the cohesive collection of beautifully crafted songs that brings me back time and again. Nostalgia is peak when I hear these songs, back to the nights I used to listen to the tape circulating over and over in my Walkman. (How did I get ahold of a 1994 album on tape!?) There’s definitely an element recency bias baked into this high ranking too, as our great friends took us to their concert last summer. Nonetheless, I stand by my selection, this album is simply phenomenal and makes me feel happier than many of the others. If you sample it begin with Windmills, Fly from Heaven, Something’s Always Wrong. @toadthewetsprocket #toadthewetsprocket #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #toadthewetsprocketdulcinea by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums of the 1990s: 02 is REM, Automatic for the People (1992) This album begins flawlessly, sustains brilliantly through the 2nd half, then builds to a perfect finale with the masterpiece, Find the River. Released just 19 months earlier, Out of Time (1991) had so many high points, that I’m amazed how solidly crafted AFTP ended up being. Few albums exist with zero skips if we’re being honest, and this one has always been there over the decades without ever being archived. Though many of the other 48 bands rank higher on my “favorite bands” list, few have been able to build such a complete album, or stay in a rotation of someone who doesn’t listen to much music anymore. Drive, Nightswimming, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts… every track is gold. @rem #automaticforthepeople #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #90smusicisthebest #remautomaticforthepeople by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums of the 1990s: 03 is U2, Zooropa/Achtung Baby (1993/91) Strike three—I couldn’t decide between these two. If I was forced to pick, I’d take Zooropa, which is simply the cream skimmed from the Achtung Baby project. Zooropa has always been my go to over the decades, and I haven’t listened to AB much since wearing it out in high school. But I must honor AB, because there would be no Zooropa without it. Stacked with brilliant tracks like Lemon, Stay, Title track, and of course the incredible, final track with Johnny Cash, The Wanderer. I’m not a fan of U2’s music after 1993, but up through Zooropa they were simply brilliant. #achtungbaby #u2zooropa #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #90smusicisthebest by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums of the 1990s: 04 is Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream (1993) I know, I know—what am I supposed to do? Anyone who doesn’t place this top 5 is being obtuse. “Today” was the anthem of mid-90s and should’ve been the soundtrack to every HS graduation slideshow. You couldn’t escape this album then, and barely can now after 33 years. Each note of each track is flawless and Corgan was the artist of a generation. by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums of the 1990s: 05 is Pearl Jam, Ten (1993) My rules—I can break them. I already made a pick from this band, formerly known as Mookie Blaylock. Ten should be a top five on any list. My tiny critique of this borderline flawless album is that “State of Love and Trust” didn’t make it on (I realize timing barely didn’t allow it.) A couple other picky suggestions to make this album absolutely perfect: “Release” should have been the opening track, and the 40 seconds of garbled droning needs to be removed from the beginning of “Once”. #pearljam #pearjamten #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #seattlegrunge by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 06 is Live, Throwing Copper (1994) I feel like there’s nothing more to say about my top albums. Yes, this album is phenomenal, stacked, unique, and timely. My first concert was this band in the summer of 1995—scheduled for Wolf Mountain, but relocated to Delta Center same day because of rain. Can you imagine the logistics of such a shuffle? I did consider their Mental Jewelry album (1991) which is still very, very good. But TC is superior and represents the high water mark for this group. Don’t sleep on the last track, it’s perhaps the best one. #livethrowingcopper #throwingcopper #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #90smusicisthebest by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 07 is Weezer, Blue Album (1994) Some of these top-10 albums simply need no reasoning or description. This contribution is simply so epic and polished in its craft and timing, that no justification holds up to be undone by another candidate. Most of us wore this album out before 1995, and it has always been fun to go back and revisit over the decades. Say it is so—a universally solid top-10 contender in any 1990s ranking. #weezerbluealbum #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #90smusicisthebest #onlyindreams by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 08 is RUSH, Roll the Bones (1991) If anyone thought I’d put Rush as no.1, you probably weren’t wrong. Any album in my top ten has been in the no.1 slot at some point in the last 36 years. This album is as magical now, as it was for the 13 year old me, who pored over each note and beat of every song, on infinite repeat. I’m an unapologetic Rush nerd, and they’ve been at the top of my list for parts of the last 5 decades. Many don’t associate Rush with the 90s, but they released 3 albums, and though Counterparts (93) might be the more popular album, I’ve always had a soft spot for Roll the Bones. #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #rollthebones #todaystomsawyer by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 09 is Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) Most people still know where they were when they discovered this album dropped. The sheer scale of this endeavor is unmatched—delivering hit after hit after hit after hit. SP may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they were as much of the Zeitgeist of the 90s as Zeppelin was to the 70s. Here is No Why, I feel, is the most quintessential SP track—all their DNA and sounds are present—like Bad was for U2. #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #meloncollieandtheinfinitesadness #smashingpumpkins #hereisnowhy by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 10 is Letters to Cleo, Aurora Gory Alice (1994) Long before Cruel to be Kind and their Cheap Trick cover—In 1994 and 1995 Letters to Cleo dropped two bold albums which were both powerful, catchy, and dripping of 90s from top to bottom. It was a very crowded music scene then, and these two contributions were somehow overlooked by mainstream outlets. Both albums are stacked, but I went with this one because it is perhaps more well known? I consider them essentially one and the same, and have always ranked them high on my list of 90s music. #1990smusic #letterstocleo #auroragoryalice by @wasatch_back
My top 50 albums from the 1990s: 11 is Morrissey, Bona Drag (1990) The Smiths created and released their full catalog of music in a span of about 3.6 years in the 80s. But there was much more music to be made. More recently I have become a big fan of Johnny Marr’s solo work, and in the early 90s I began listening to Morrissey’s studio albums and I still enjoy the easy listenability his timeless music gives. While Marr’s and Rourke’s magic is absent, the improbable lyrics and catchy melodies still prevail. His albums were a huge part of my 90s and still today. #1990smusic #musicfromthe90s #morrisseybonadrag #bonadrag #morrissey by @wasatch_back
