My personal experience: Earlier this year I visited the monument earlier this year with my family. The monument is truly beautiful especially in person! by @washingtonmonumentdc

In August 2011 Washington D.C. Was hit with a 5.8 magnitude earthquake caused cracks and falling debris on the monument. After 33 months the monument was restored to it's original state. Over 150 cracks were filled in the monument and all rainwater leaks have been sealed. The elevator inside the monument is back in working order. The entire restoration of the monument cost $15 million dollars. Damaged marble was replaced with stone from the same Maryland quarry as the monuments original quarry. by @washingtonmonumentdc

The construction of the Washington Monument started in 1848. It was built in commemoration of the first president George Washington. However the construction of the monument was halted from 1854 to 1877 due to lack of funds. The monument was constructed east of the reflecting pool and the Lincoln Memorial. The Washington National Monument Society announced a design for the monument after raising $28,000 in donations. The man who won the competition for the honor to design the monument was architect Robert Mills by @washingtonmonumentdc

In 1854 the Washington National Monument society ran out of money, and the project was put to a stop. 25 years later construction of the monument continued. They completed the top two thirds using marble from a different location. The first 152 feet of the monument was constructed using marble from Texas, Maryland. The second part of the monument was built using marble from Sheffield, Massachusetts. The plan for the monument was designed by Robert Mills. by @washingtonmonumentdc
