People's Choice Podcast Award nominated. Taking intentional risk for your creative life. Hosts: @heather_vickeryandco & @alanseales
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What if you don't have to choose just ONE thing to be? 👀

Writer. Poet. Broadway producer. Mom. Creator.

Why do we keep telling ourselves we have to pick one identity, one career path, one version of success?

On our latest episode of Was It Chance?, Heather Vickery and @alanseales Seal sit down with @meganminutillo to talk about what happens when the career you're supposed to want turns out not to be the one you actually want.

Megan left a steady teaching job, followed her creative curiosity, and built a career that includes poetry, producing, writing, and a Tony Award nomination for Operation Mincemeat. 🎭

But the journey wasn't a straight line.

Heather and Alan get into the messy, honest realities of being a multi-passionate creative: navigating motherhood, making space for writing, knowing when to focus on one project, and giving yourself permission to let another wait.

Megan also shares how poetry emerged during a challenging season of motherhood and IVF, eventually connecting her with readers who saw their own experiences reflected in her words.

And then there's Tuscan Witch—her intriguing novel-in-progress about witches, sisterhood, Italy, and a world responding to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Her reminder? You can have it all. Just not all at the same time.

If you've ever felt behind because you're pursuing too many things—or guilty because you're not doing them all at once—this conversation is for you.

What happens when you discover your mom is a civil rights icon… from a history book?

On our latest episode of Was It Chance?, Heather Vickery and @alanseales sit down with @lokimulholland for a conversation that starts with his mother, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, and goes somewhere much bigger.

Growing up, Loki mostly knew Joan as “Mom.”

It wasn’t until he saw her in his history books that he began to understand the extraordinary role she played in the Civil Rights Movement.

Years later, Loki picked up a camera to tell her story.

He thought he was making a documentary.

Instead, that one creative decision opened the door to an entire career telling stories about civil rights, racism, voting rights, and the people who too often get left out of history.

Heather and Alan dig into what happens when you follow an opportunity before you know where it’s going, how an “accidental” career can become an intentional calling, and why preserving these stories matters.

They also talk about Loki’s new book, Get Back to the Counter.

And then there’s the story of how Loki accidentally got trapped in Russia at 20 years old.

Alan and Heather sit down with New Jersey–based voice actor and coach @chrisdattolivo to unpack the winding, risk-filled path that led him from a corporate marketing job he despised to a thriving career behind the mic. Chris shares how a mix of early creative instincts, a pivotal audiobook opportunity, and one bold decision to quit his job forced him to bet on himself in a big way. What followed was a crash course in resilience, self-marketing, and navigating the unpredictable “feast or famine” reality of voiceover work.

We sit down with documentary filmmaker @kscoggin to unpack the decade-long journey behind her deeply personal film Flood. What begins as a curiosity about science, faith, and her upbringing as a young earth creationist evolves into a profound exploration of family, identity, and the limits of belief. Katy shares how a chance opportunity to work in documentary filmmaking, along with a simple ask to a mentor, set her on a path that would ultimately lead her back home with a camera, confronting the most complicated relationship in her life, the one with her father.

In this deeply vulnerable episode of Was It Chance?, we sit down with @richwrightunltd , founder of The Artist Recovery, for an honest conversation about creativity, depression, suicide, and the courage it takes to stay curious about hope.

Rich shares how his creative instincts showed up early—from reverse-engineering fashion designs in his mind to launching his own clothing line with zero formal training. But when that venture collapsed in a high-stakes moment at Lollapalooza, it triggered a spiral that led to a suicide attempt and a long journey through inpatient care, therapy, and ultimately a search for healing beyond traditional models.

Heather Vickery and Alan Sseales sit down with Troy Horne, a multi-hyphenate creative whose career spans music, Broadway, television, entrepreneurship, and authorship. The conversation explores what it really means to take intentional risks—especially in midlife—and how clarity, courage, and self-trust compound over time.

Troy shares how his creative journey began with a childhood performance in church that revealed both his talent and his appetite for risk. From there, he followed a path shaped by persistence rather than certainty, navigating choir, talent shows, and eventually national television on Star Search. That experience became an early lesson in how the entertainment industry actually works—where talent matters, but timing, narrative, and business needs often matter just as much.

In this episode of Was It Chance, Heather Vickery and Alan Seales sit down with Paul Pape—creative problem navigator, TEDx speaker, author, and the man affectionately known as “Santa for Nerds.” From a studio in Nebraska, Paul has built custom props, collectibles, and prototypes for Disney, Universal, Nickelodeon, Broadway, and The Tonight Show, becoming the go-to person when clients need something that doesn’t exist yet.

Paul shares how a theater background, relentless curiosity, and a bend-don’t-break mindset led him from being told he’d never act again to designing iconic objects for film, television, and live entertainment. Along the way, he breaks down how creatives can build sustainable businesses without sacrificing their artistic soul—by charging for labor, reframing pricing, and even gamifying business strategy.
