According to @natgeo , “Controlled burning, or prescribed burning, is setting planned fires to maintain the health of a forest.”Indigenous civilizations have used controlled burns for centuries as part of forest management. As climate change makes wildfires more catastrophic and common, we must use every tool we have to ensure those fires don’t fall into the “mega” category, and controlled burns are an excellent tool for that. The plant you were told not to touch has been clothing people for generations.In North Sikkim’s Dzongu Valley, the Lepcha community has long transformed stinging nettle (surong) into fibre. It’s a practice rooted in local knowledge, using a plant that grows naturally in the region without irrigation or pesticides while helping stabilize fragile mountain slopes.It also puts our idea of “innovation” into perspective. A single cotton T-shirt can require around 2,700 litres of water to produce, roughly what one person drinks over two and a half years.It is often assumed that sustainability will come from inventing something entirely new. But many communities have been working with nature, rather than against it, for centuries. Their knowledge evolved through a deep understanding of local landscapes, seasons and resources. That doesn’t mean these practices are a one size fits all solution for today’s fashion industry, but they do encourage us to broaden what we consider innovation and who we recognise as innovators.Share it with someone who’d be intrigued by this. This might be one of the smartest uses of plastic I’ve ever seen. A bag used for 10 minutes can outlive generations. And with less than 10% of all plastic ever produced having been recycled, we’re surrounded by the consequences on land, in our oceans, and increasingly, in our own bodies.That’s why solutions like @ecollabo8 need our attention. Instead of trying to turn plastic back into plastic, they’re transforming low-value plastic waste into durable building materials that can last for over a century.It’s a reminder that waste isn’t always the problem. Sometimes, it’s a design problem. When we rethink what discarded materials can become, we reduce the need for virgin resources, keep waste out of nature, and move closer to a truly circular economy.Recycling alone won’t solve the plastic crisis. Music festivals don’t have to leave mountains of trash behind.Last year, Elements Music and Arts Festival showed what’s possible when sustainability is treated as part of the experience, not an afterthought.Over four days, the festival managed more than 359,000 pounds of material, diverting over 56,000 pounds from landfills through recycling, composting, donations, and specialized recovery programs.Their TECTONIC (@tectonicteam) Eco Hub turned sustainability into something people wanted to participate in, with scavenger hunts, litter bingo, recycling games, and a prize cart that rewarded attendees for helping keep the grounds clean. More than 9,500 pounds of food waste were composted, 1,400 pounds of usable materials were donated for continued use, and thousands of pounds of aluminum, glass, cardboard, and other materials were recovered instead of being discarded.The most encouraging part? Elements isn’t presenting this as a finished product. They’re openly sharing their data, measuring their progress, and committing to improving every year.This is the kind of leadership we’d love to see become the standard across the live music industry. Festivals bring people together to celebrate art, music, and community.
