Boils and ghouls! 😈 On October 5th at @paradiseonbloor, Hear Me Out! considers the question, “Is Billy Zane our greatest living thespian?” TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT, the genre-blending Rio Bravo meets Evil Dead gore-fest was pronounced DOA by critics in 1995, but were they wrong? DEAD wrong?? Taking place over one night in a decrepit boarding house, this supernatural siege sees a smooth-talking demon known as the Collector (Billy Zane) hunting down a drifter named Brayker (William Sadler) in order to obtain a mystical artifact that will allow demons to rule all of existence. Rounding out the cast is a murderer’s row of character actors including CCH Pounder, Jada Pinkett Smith, Thomas Hayden Church, and…. Dick Miller (gasp!).  Legendary cinematographer Ernest Dickinson (Do the Right Thing) brings his trademark kinetic energy to the director’s chair alongside Todd Masters’ hog-wild special effects to create 93 minutes of PURE. CINEMATIC. MAYHEM. More than a feature-length episode of Tales From the Crypt (not that there’s anything wrong with that!!!), this well-oiled machine sings with its collaborators working at the top of their game (and having a ball). Joining us to offer their passionate defence is the Cryptkeeper’s no. 1 fan Alison Lang, long-time programmer of Tender Prey at @eyesore_cinema and the founder and editor of film zine Movies Men Ruined for Me. One of the most exciting nights of my month was dinner at Desotos with Marc Basque (@wasteoftaste) and Lacey Novinka (@laceynovinka) Omg! They were the best! Both programmers for their ‘Hear Me Out!’ screening series at the Paradise (@hearmeoutparadise), Marc and Lacey exude such a beautiful warmth and joy and silliness as they spoke with me about their childhood love of movies, and their philosophies underpinning this whimsical yet profound cinematic format. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Marc describes his parents’ VHS collection: “They weren’t that into the arts, but our family had the biggest VHS collection out of anyone! I was constantly watching movies! Jim Carrey movies, Terminator 2, Kevin Smith!” While Lacey, growing up in Madoc, Ontario, describes wearing out her VHSs of Space Jam and Grease 2. A bit of a sullen kid, she discovered Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides a lil’ too early in life. Meeting at the Revue, the pair soon connected, developing their idea for a unique screening series, ‘Hear Me Out!’, now on its way to its fourth screening. Working with a courtroom format, choosing critical misfires, box-office bombs, or films with no cultural impact, Marc and Lacey describe their catalogue as films that have been “unfairly swept under the rug.” Their screening evenings include a fulsome discussion, including a clear prosecution and measured defence, laying out the case for why the film likely bombed and, in response, why it should maybe be reconsidered. Working in two registers, their team engages with both humour and sincerity, their silly antics and thoughtful guest speakers offering a compelling tonal range: they bring the laughs but also encourage deep thought as they explore whether certain films deserve second chances. Looking forward to their screening of John Waters’ Pecker, screening Monday, Marc adds, “We’re trying to create the ideal possible environment to enjoy these films, we love the mix of serious and silly!” by @wasteoftaste

The film follows the rise to stardom of teenaged photographer/sandwich shop worker Pecker (Edward Furlong), whose pictures of his delightfully dysfunctional family and eccentric fellow Baltimoreans lands him smack dab in New York City’s hot art scene.  What is Waters’ most autobiographical film may also be his most ripe for reassessment, with its snarky satire on the art world in contrast with The People’s Pervert’s typical parade of Baltimore oddities.
