Just me? Or you too?

The truth is, I did need this though. I needed the excuse to go outside each day. I needed the reminder to spend time out in nature. I needed the time to slow down, unplug, and notice the small things.

People often get excited for the crows to bring them a gift, but for me, the best gift they have given me is strengthening my relationship with nature.

I’m curious, for those of you who have befriended a crow, what has been your reasoning behind it?

Looking to befriend a crow? You’re in the right place!

I began befriending my neighborhood crows about 3 years ago. At first they were very shy, but now they stop by every day and even bring gifts!

Here are my top tips on how to earn their friendship:

✨Bring some snacks! It all starts here. Unsalted peanuts in the shell, scrambled eggs, and dry dog kibble have all been favorites. Yes, crows are scavengers and will eat just about anything, but that doesn’t mean everything you leave them is healthy. Avoid salted/flavored nuts, dairy and highly processed foods (yes, they might like them, but it’s not healthy for them in the long run)

✨Be consistent. Crows are highly intelligent and can easily notice patterns. Showing up around the same time at the same place each day will help you earn their trust. You can also try having your own distinctive signal (like a whistle or greeting) that will help them begin to recognize you from afar.

✨Respect their space. It’s tempting to want to get up close as quickly as possible, but it’s important to remember they are wild animals. Unless you live in an area where crows are already socialized to humans, they will appreciate you keeping your distance while you earn their trust.

✨Give it time. Don’t give up if they don’t come around right away. Based on social media posts, you may think they’ll be eating out of your hand in a matter of weeks, but for most geographic areas, that’s not realistic. Just keep on giving it time as it could take months or even years before they get comfortable with you.

If you have befriended crows, what tips would you add?

And if you’re befriending crows for the first time, I wish you the best of luck!!

OMG 🤩

No matter how many times they visit, I’m still in awe that they chose me and my yard. I mean, the peanuts and treats I leave out help, but I still feel lucky that they grace me with their presence!

They’ll take care of it 💅🏼

Not only can crows recognize individual human faces, they’re know to hold grudges against humans for decades. They can even pass down their grudge to their offspring or to other crows within their community.

Long story short, don’t make enemies with a crow.

There are countless stories from around the world of people who have made crows upset with them (either intentionally or not) and those crows taking out revenge on them for long periods of time.

For me, I’d rather be friends when the crows. I’ve been feeding my neighborhood crows for almost three years now, ever since I moved into my new house. And now they bring me gifts!

Often misunderstood, and sometimes even feared, these birds are real quite incredible!

You may have heard of their superior intelligence or their problem-solving abilities, but I also think they’re just stunning to look at.

Sure, they don’t have the flashy colors of tropical birds, or the iridescence of other black birds, but once you pay closer attention, you get to know their unique beauty 🖤

Photo 9 is my favorite, which one is yours?

This was a great week in befriending the crows, although I am worrying that I haven’t seen any of their fledglings yet. They usually bring them to my yard by this point in the season, but I haven’t seen any yet

They also haven’t gone missing for a few weeks like they usually do when raising their offspring. 🥺

I’m hoping they did gave a successful breeding season and that their patterns are just different this year. Gotta hold onto hope!

Of course I had to add fellow birder @bonnerblack’s new release to this post. 🎶

Crows form lifelong bonds with their mate and share nesting and parenting responsibilities equally. This strong teamwork increases their chances of survival and helps their babies thrive.

This is the bonded pair who visit me each day, even when it’s raining!

In past years, they have brought their fledglings to my yard to enjoy the snacks I leave out for them. This year, I haven’t seen any yet, but it’s still early and I hope to see them soon!

In the meantime, it’s been a joy to see these two lovebirds be affectionate with one another. I often see them allopreening (when one grooms the feathers of the other), doing their sweet little greeting dance or working together to chase off the neighborhood hawks. 🖤

Have you seen any crow fledglings in your area yet?
