I guess it’s not really a huge surprise if you have spoken with me in the last two days at @tokyowatchweek_official but this has to be one of my favorite watches I’ve gotten to try on this weekend. Perfect proportions, amazing balance on the wrist and a stunning guilloche dial by @jnshapiro_watches. I also had a few opportunities to speak with @mingwatches while they’re in town and their passion, coupled with friendly and thoughtful interactions have made me really appreciate them even more. An amazing representative of Malaysia and all the amazing time pieces coming out of the region. by @watch.papa

Some straps change how a watch looks, but to me this feels like something bigger. Huge thank you to @nilsson_in_th and @iamnghia x @oan.gio. I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know you guys, and increasingly I realize that the people I’ve met have become one of the biggest gifts this hobby has given me. The strap itself is completely unique, made from remnants of vintage Japanese kimono fabric. An absolute joy to wear, and it feels like a perfect match. Different people, places and crafts coming together around one watch that has become much more than the sum of its parts and ultimately the most meaningful timepiece I own. by @watch.papa

Oan Gio - Green Carnavale (custom) I wanted to prioritize one thing for my first ever @oan.gio custom piece: a hand guilloché dial. But that became just the starting point for something much bigger. Before I ever had the chance to meet @iamnghia much of my interest in Oan Gio came through conversations with existing owners like @tokyowatchenthusiast, @watcheskick and @themainplatesf. Different people and perspectives, but the same enthusiasm for the brand and the same willingness to share it. It was infectious and I soon became a big fan. It’s incredible to see it on my wrist now. The rose engine guilloché by @renzetti1909milano is every bit as beautiful as I hoped it would be. Cut the old fashioned way on a century old hand operated engine, one cut at a time. It’s pure art and skill earned and kept for 4 generations! Theres a lot of meaning behind other design choices too. Green for life and renewal. Mother of pearl, formed slowly over time, sitting exactly on the sub seconds dial where the watch makes the passage of time visible. But somehow, even all of the above feels secondary to the people I have met along the way. The conversations and excitement around every new release and every custom piece posted gives me a strong sense that fans want to see not just their own watch come together, but the whole community grow. That is what makes this feel connected to something much larger than the timepiece itself. And I think that is what I will remember most when wearing it. Big thanks to the OG community and most of all to @iamnghia and @hoangoanhnguyen90 for making all of this happen. Breguet Tradition 7027BA What I find interesting about the Tradition is where its architecture and iconic design came from, because there is a wonderful contradiction in there that reminds me of just how ridiculous our wonderful hobby can be. The original Souscription watches that inspired the Tradition were conceived around simplification. The idea was to create something easier to manufacture and more affordable to a broader clientele in post revolution France. More than two centuries later, Breguet took that “simple” architecture and turned it into high horology theatre: frosted surfaces, heat blued screws, a solid gold hand guilloche dial and an exposed gear train you can visually follow from barrel to escapement. A watch born from simplicity and affordability, transformed into a dense 37mm canvas packed with traditional high horology finishing techniques that would make this text too long if I listed it all out. I interpret that as not just a tribute to Breguet’s history, but to watchmaking itself, and to the idea some of us sickos have already internalized: that an outdated mechanical device can also be made into art. #breguet #breguettradition #7027ba by @watch.papa

Visited @kuronotokyo’s Aoyama salon to take a look at the Calendrier SBR. A small batch off-calendar release that seems to have been a passion project for Asaoka-san. The technical specs are identical to last year’s special anniversary edition in salmon pink, but with the addition of applied Arabic numerals and the switch to a beautiful saxe blue. The watch also features recessed subdials and a vertical guilloche pattern which add a lot of 3 dimensionality and visual interest. As usual for Kurono this release stands out for amazing design at an approachable price point. IWC Ingenieur 40 Automatic 50th anniversary edition It was love at first sight. I was having a perfectly normal day when I saw the announcement for the new Ingenieur 50th Anniversary. About two hours later, I was walking out of the IWC flagship boutique in Ginza with one on my wrist. 😂 The second I saw it in person I knew it had to be mine. It’s a masterfully executed monochromatic watch with the vertically brushed silver dial giving it an almost linen-like texture that works beautifully with all the brushed steel surrounding it. I think the dial is the star for me, and what makes this watch finally feel distinctive enough to deserve a slot in my watch box. There are also some strong vintage vibes here, but in a robust modern build so there’s no stress about wearing it regardless of what I have planned or what the weather looks like. Going in I actually thought I’d prefer the 35mm. And I did love it. But once both were on the wrist, the 40 was the one for me. The satin finished center links on the bracelet were a big part of that decision. They make the whole watch feel quieter and more understated, while still keeping a snug and compact profile. The 50th anniversary, the connection to the original 1976 Ingenieur SL, and the fact that this is now my second Genta designed watch are really just the cherry on top. What I like most though is simply how “me” it feels. That’s something I can’t necessarily say about every watch I own right now. At first you gush over the blue dial and the amazing finishing on the bracelet, etc. But then after wearing it for a while all of that disappears. The more you get to know the Overseas the less ceremoniously you treat it. It fits into daily life really well whether it’s some desk work or a quick coffee break. Sometimes an outfit, an occasion or a mood calls for something simple. The Sub’s design should excel in those conditions. It is such a versatile watch with amazing history and heritage but it seems to be the last choice i reach for in the watch box recently. If you have talked to me about watches for more than 5 minutes you’ll know that I am a huge fan of integrated bracelet watches. And sometimes that has led to some impulsive purchases. Enter this 34mm Seiko, with Eastern Arabic numerals, and just enough jingle jangle energy to keep things interesting and fun for a casual wear here and there. I don’t really have much more to say about it, it just gets the job done in the most simple way possible which is probably fine. Or maybe not. Went to the airport today to send my mom back home. The Pepsi had to be the only choice for the wrist. I’ve always loved the aviation and travel connection of the watch, but today the second timezone felt a little more meaningful. A quick glance makes it easy to remember what time it is where she’ll be and that helps me to feel a little more connected even when we’re far apart. by @watch.papa
