Tennet Argonaut | WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 75

This week, James and I are diving into a special release from close to home: the Tennet Argonaut.

On paper, this 300m dive watch marks the ambitious second act from Singaporean microbrand Tennet and founder Royce, following up on their first release, the Somerset.

Crafted in full 904L stainless steel and powered by a custom-decorated Swiss Sellita movement, it brings signature design cues like a lumed bezel, custom teardrop handset, and a heavy-duty Pelican case to the table.

However, entering the market at a $1,499 USD pre-order price tag puts it head-to-head with established microbrand heavyweights operating well under the $1,000 threshold. We put its true collector value to the test under our 5-criteria scoring system.

So it boils down to this: Is the Argonaut a wave-worthy microbrand triumph that justifies pushing past the $1K barrier, or is it an overambitious release that’s not quite ready?

H. Moser Streamliner Off-Grid | WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 74

This week, James and I are breaking down one of the most polarizing releases of the year: the H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner Off-Grid.

On paper, this $4,900 limited-edition release is Moser’s tongue-in-cheek foray into the luxury utility space. Housed in an integrated 42.6mm Streamliner-style case with zero traditional lugs, it combines a classic analog sub-dial up top with an LCD digital display below, offering quick time-zone shifts, sunrise/sunset tracking, without any smartphone connectivity or heart-rate tracking clutter.

However, with a hefty retail price tag for a quartz/digital hybrid, no heart-rate sensor, and a rigid 14.4mm case profile, we put its true collector appeal to the test under our 5-criteria scoring system.

So it boils down to this: Is the Off-Grid a stroke of anti-smartwatch digital genius from high horology’s favorite disruptive brand, or is it a mispriced menace destined to test the limits of collector loyalty?

Rolex Perpetual Padellone | WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 73

This week, James and I are breaking down a massive, unexpected drop from the Crown: the new Rolex Perpetual Padellone Annual Calendar.

On paper, this release marks a monumental shift for modern Rolex. Reviving the spirit of the legendary 1950s Reference 8171 “Padellone” (Italian for large frying pan), it introduces the house’s first-ever modern annual calendar complication housed inside the refined 1908 platform. Complete with a 5Hz Dynapulse escapement, a multi-layered textured dial featuring a pointer date and moonphase, and a case span of 39mm with an ultra-compact 45mm lug-to-lug, it represents the purest signal yet that Rolex is aiming directly for high-horology heavyweights.

However, with eye-watering retail price tags starting at $59,000 on leather and climbing past $72,000 on precious-metal bracelets, it will boil down to this: Is the Padellone an instantaneous annual calendar masterpiece worthy of elevating the Crown into grail dress territory, or is it an overpriced flex destined to be panned on the secondary market?

Blancpain, Bulgari x Halter & MING — The Ones We Missed! | WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 72

This week, James and I are changing up the format to clear out our backlog and tackle three major limited releases we couldn’t fit into our regular schedule.

On paper, this lineup covers the entire horological spectrum: Blancpain’s 37.4mm Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary vintage dive reboot, Bulgari’s ultra-thin $80k dual-time collaboration with independent legend Vianney Halter, and MING’s innovative 37.05 Comet featuring a world-first mechanical DST bezel adjustment.

Retaining our focus on value, wearability, and design lineage, we put all three through our rapid-fire reality check.

The question we try to answer is: are any of these three limited watches worth hunting down on the secondary market, or did we have zero regrets letting them pass by?

Tudor Northflag - WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 71

This week, James and I are diving straight into Geneva Watch Days chatter to tackle one of Tudor’s most unexpected revivals: the return of the Northflag.

On paper, this 2026 update brings Tudor’s cult-favorite modern tool watch back to the catalog with a serious spec upgrade. The new Northflag trades its original power reserve indicator for a 4th-hand GMT complication, powered by a METAS-certified manufacture movement visible through a sapphire caseback.

Retaining its signature integrated-bracelet architecture, it stands out as one of the few truly distinct, non-homage designs in the modern Tudor family (comparing against Rolex of course).

However, with a pricetag upwards of more than USD 5,000 with no ability for strap play, is this new version worth of a celebrated return, or does it struggle to justify its premium over microbrand alternatives?

M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese - WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 70

Not on our bingo card but James and I are breaking our normal schedule for an impromptu deep dive into the latest creation from Max Büsser’s M.A.D.Editions lab: the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese.

On paper, this release is a tribute to high-concept, accessible independent horology. Created in collaboration with legendary watchmaker Vincent Calabrese and inspired by his iconic Baladin, it reinterprets his gliding/wandering hour display using a heavily modified module atop LJP movement. Housed in a surprisingly wearable 40mm case with a 43.7mm lug-to-lug, a domed dial with curved hands, and the signature spinning tungsten rotor beneath, it brings true indie art to a $3,300 raffle price tag.

With the 5-day raffle window officially open, we put this unexpected collaboration to the test under our 5-criteria scoring system to see if it earns a spot on your wrist or in your credit card hold.

So is this worthy of your consideration and do we recommend you raffle or do we tell you to look away? Find out our unfiltered thoughts on our latest episode, which is now live.

Omega Speedmaster 38 | WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 69

This week, James and I are putting an impromptu release under the microscope: the newly refreshed Omega Speedmaster 38 collection.

Positioned on paper as a smaller, more accessible entry into the Speedmaster universe, this update steps away from the divisive oval subdials of the past. Featuring classic round registers, an automatic coaxial movement with 100m of water resistance, micro-adjusting clasps, and new dial colorways including a Snoopy-esque blue ceramic bezel on lacquered white; it presents an intriguing alternative for smaller wrists and automatic-chronograph seekers.

However, behind the lower retail price tag lies a familiar collector dilemma: an automatic case thickness pushing 14.75mm and a design identity caught directly in the massive shadow of the Speedmaster Professional.

So it boils down to this: Is the refreshed Speedmaster 38 worthy of consideration in today’s market?

Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy 50th - WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 68

This week, James and I are revisiting one of the most polarizing and persistent hype grails of the modern watch era: the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy 50th Anniversary.

Six years after its 2020 debut, this non-limited yet aggressively allocated release still remains on our radar. Housed in a classic 42mm Moonwatch silhouette and that legendary animatronic caseback where Snoopy orbits the moon in sync with the chronograph seconds hand while Earth rotates with the sub-seconds, it is, on paper, pure horological theater.

With secondary market premiums softening significantly from their peak, we put its true staying power to the test under our updated scoring system.

So it boils down to this: Is this 50th Anniversary Speedmaster an absolute space dog masterpiece worthy of the hunt, or is the secondary premium just high-altitude wallet fog?

Baltic Aquascaphe MK2 - WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 67

This week, James and I are putting one of the absolute darlings of the microbrand world back under the microscope: the newly updated Baltic Aquascaphe MK2.

On paper, Baltic’s flagship vintage-inspired diver gets a subtle but meaningful update: the introduction of a color-matched 6 o’clock date window.

Our discussion also goes over how the brand now offers two distinct case sizes: a classic 39.5mm and a ultra-proportional 37mm and whether it remains one of the most compelling GADA proposals on the market.

Plus, this episode marks us locking in our new criteria introduced in the last episode, i.e. Special Sauce, following all the feedback we received. This is to test if a watch has that unquantifiable magic beyond standard specs.

Find out our honest take on the watch and our subjective preferences on the classic date vs no date debate.

Fears x AMW 40.5 ‘Ultimus’ - WTH - Worth the Hype? Ep 66

This week, James and I did an impromptu recording on the newly unveiled British collaboration: the Fears x Andrew Morgan Watches Brunswick 40.5 ‘Ultimus’ Jump Hour.

On paper, this release is an absolute masterclass in subtle, layered design evolution. Housed in Fears’ signature 40.5mm cushion case, and pairs a fully loomed ceramic center disc with a sapphire ring and a top-mounted cyclops to magnify the jumping hour display. Powered by a Christopher Ward proprietary jump hour module built on a Sellita base, it stands out as an unexpected, thoughtfully executed collabarations we have seen this year.

Plus, we introduce a brand-new 5th scoring criteria on the episode. Having heard all your feedback, we are moving from Horological Features to instead include the “Special Sauce” of a release.

So it boils down to this: Is this jump-hour Brunswick a genuine triumph of British design collaboration, or is it a plain white square that comes in a bit too steep at retail?

Homage Back To Its Roots

Taking the MING 37.06 Royal Selangor appreciation full circle this weekend. Took the kids to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre to do some hammering of our own at the School of Hard Knocks. Safe to say, pewter making is serious work and I’ve now got a way better appreciation of the finer hammering required to make the dial on the 37.06!

PS: Photo taken by my better half. I believe she’s clearly the better photographer of wristshots. Now why did it take me till now to realize that? LOL

Homecoming

This wasn’t on the cards.
A month ago I was still packing up my life elsewhere. Today I’m back home and somehow find myself staring at a watch born from a collaboration between two brands that resonate deeply with my Malaysian roots.

I suspect part of the attraction is that I’m a hopeless sucker for firsts. The first edition. The first collaboration. The first MING watch fully assembled in Malaysia, with a dial manufactured here as well.

I’m sure fellow collectors will understand this particular irrationality. Maybe it is the symbolism of coming home. Maybe it is the desire to bookmark this chapter of my life in a timepiece.

Or maybe it’s simply the collector in me finding a story too difficult to ignore.

Either way, it’s a #NWA and one I’m proud to call my own.

PS: @my.watches.podcast and I did a special #worththehype episode that just dropped last night so check it out, if you fancy!
