🛰️ Hakathon Project Spotlight: Sensor Arbitor

What happens when spacecraft sensors disagree during a critical descent?

When you're millions of kilometres from Earth, waiting for a human decision may not be an option. This lab explored how AI-assisted sensor arbitration could help an autonomous vehicle determine which sensor to trust, respond to faults and maintain safe operations.

The project built a deep-space descent fault-arbitration environment that combines real-time telemetry, deterministic monitoring, synthetic fault injection and a local Gemma-based AI arbiter.

The system continuously compared data from an IMU gyroscope with an independent camera rotational-motion proxy, looking for meaningful disagreement rather than reacting to every temporary fluctuation.

The most important idea was AI doesn't make the final decision in isolation.

The system used classical, deterministic monitoring to detect a conflict, then woke the Gemma arbiter to reason about the situation.

The result was a validated, traceable and safety-guarded decision rather than an unexplained AI response.

This lab demonstrates an important direction for autonomous systems: combining AI reasoning with deterministic safety controls so machines can respond intelligently when conditions change and human intervention isn't immediately available.

From sensor disagreement to fault diagnosis, arbitration and recovery—this is a glimpse into how AI could help make future autonomous vehicles more resilient.

🛰️ Hackathon Project Spotlight : Parallax

What happens when a spacecraft encounters a sensor failure millions of kilometres from Earth—and waiting for instructions isn't an option?

PARALLAX explores a future of fault-tolerant autonomous spacecraft operations, where onboard AI can help detect problems, reason through possible causes, evaluate recovery options and support safe decision-making when communication with Earth is delayed.

The project created an end-to-end experimental environment connecting physical sensor hardware, spacecraft telemetry, fault injection and an AI-powered mission operations interface.

🧠 What it achieved:
The prototype demonstrated a workflow for turning telemetry anomalies into structured operational intelligence. Fault scenarios could be introduced, competing hypotheses evaluated and recovery plans generated for review.

The bigger idea?

Autonomy isn't just about making AI smarter. It's about making AI useful when humans can't respond immediately—and designing systems that reason, verify and recover safely.

From a breadboard prototype to an autonomous mission-operations concept, PARALLAX shows what can happen when AI + hardware + telemetry + agentic reasoning come together.

🚑 Hackathon Project Spotlight: CareFlow 360

What happens when AI, healthcare data, and safety-first engineering come together?

CareFlow 360 demonstrated a more responsible approach of how multimodal AI can bring together patient history, vital signs, clinical observations and medical imaging to help clinicians synthesize information faster and identify potential risks.

The team built and demonstrated a working prototype that connects clinical data, multimodal information, and a deterministic safety backend, with FHIR R4 standards supporting structured healthcare interoperability.

Generative AI doesn't have to operate as a “black box.” Instead, AI can be placed inside a controlled safety architecture where deterministic rules can intercept critical conditions, surface alerts and keep clinical decision-making in the hands of healthcare professionals.

🛰️ Hackathon Project Spotlight: HALO

When a spacecraft loses communication, it must determine whether the cause is temporary, technical, or permanent—without waiting for instructions from Earth.

HALO is a distributed, self-triaging satellite network that helps each spacecraft diagnose communication failures and choose an appropriate response, such as waiting, rerouting, throttling data, re-syncing, or blacklisting an unresponsive peer.

Using real satellite orbital data, simulated link failures, and evidence shared between neighbouring spacecraft, HALO continuously updates the probability of different fault causes.

Gemma serves as the onboard diagnosis engine, turning technical observations into a likely cause, confidence score, and clear explanation for flight controllers. Deterministic policies remain responsible for selecting and applying actions.

The project also identifies situations where two faults are physically impossible to distinguish—making it clear when the system has enough evidence to diagnose a problem and when it may still be guessing.

HALO demonstrates how edge AI and delay-tolerant networking could support more resilient autonomous spacecraft.

🏁 Hackathon Project Spotlight: RaceMind

What happens when predictive maintenance meets motorsport?
RaceMind is a real-time simulation and predictive analytics platform designed to help racing teams improve both track training and race-day performance. From Formula SAE and rally teams to endurance racing, the platform helps engineers learn from historical runs, identify emerging issues, and make faster, data-informed decisions.

RaceMind processes OBD-II telemetry from a vehicle’s CAN bus, including speed, temperature, pressure, fuel consumption, and other sensor data. It can also incorporate vehicle metadata and external weather information to provide additional context.

Under the hood, RaceMind combines specialized models for tread wear, fuel consumption forecasting, rules-based analysis, and unsupervised time-series anomaly detection powered by Google’s TimesFM.

The Gemma family of models sits at the centre of the experience, translating technical alerts into clear, actionable guidance for drivers and engineers. Through an agent-in-the-loop feedback system, RaceMind can also adjust thresholds, reduce unnecessary alerts, and become more useful as engineering teams continue using it.

This project demonstrates how AI, telemetry, and predictive analytics can work together to transform complex vehicle data into practical racing intelligence.
