Today, the Watson School launched the Workforce Development Policy Lab, a new initiative that will assess which workforce development and career-oriented higher education programs help people build stronger careers and increase their earnings over time.

Together with research partner Opportunity Insights and local and national partners, including Building Futures, the Rhode Island Foundation and RAISE US, the Lab will use rigorous data and analysis to better understand what works for workers, employers and communities.

The new Lab is part of the Watson School’s growing engagement with state and local policy challenges, including work connected to Brown University’s commitment to Rhode Island workforce development.

Meet the new director of the Africa Initiative 🌍

Wilmot James — internationally recognized public health expert and former member of South Africa's Parliament — is bringing a forward-looking vision to the initiative, one that spotlights Africa's present-day assets rather than only the legacy of colonialism.

His plans include research on Africa's demographic strengths, critical minerals, and agricultural potential, plus a new annual conference series beginning next April on climate, water and food security.
