Wife and kids came to visit me in Peterborough and it’d been so long since they’d seen me they had to check the poster to make sure they had the right guy taken in Trent University by @waub

I’m thrilled and honoured to serve as the Margaret Laurence Writer in Residence at @trentuniversity this fall! The residency features two public talks: one in Oshawa on Oct. 1 and one in Peterborough on Oct. 8. See the attached posters for details. I’m really looking forward to meeting Trent students and staff during my time there. With Early Bird all but finished, I plan to use the residency to get started on my next book, which is a non-fiction essay collection. I’m very grateful for this opportunity! by @waub

For years I posted about clubhouse sandwiches on Twitter, but Twitter sucks now so I don’t post there anymore. I would post the club sandwiches I ate on my travels as part of an overall quest to find the best one in all the land. I worry that my account may be eventually deleted due to inactivity, and all that research could be lost. So as a backup, I’ll share some of my favourites here from nearly a decade of good eating. In order of appearance:

Sam’s Place, Peterborough, ON
The Moose, Attawapiskat
Timbers Restaurant, Thunder Bay, ON
District Eatery, Toronto, ON
Valois’ Restaurant, Mattawa, ON
Park Cafe, Saskatoon, SK
The Colonial, Coniston, ON
Highlevel Diner. Edmonton, AB
Maclab Bistro, Banff, AB
Old Loft Restaurant, Woody Point, NL
Jon’s Restaurant, Brockville, ON

The quest continues, so please share your clubhouse recommendations! by @waub

The legendary @mattpike1972 showing how it’s done even when all the gear isn’t quite working. The last part of “Fury Whip” with the solo is one of my favourite bits of music ever, and I felt compelled to record it last night in Toronto because it had been almost a decade since the last time I saw @highonfireband live. Even though something went wrong with his rig for a moment there, he still kept the ship barrelling forward, right to the tune’s tremendous conclusion. It was an impressive display of showmanship and skill on the whole band’s part. The sheer ferocity and magnitude of High on Fire is something truly to behold. taken in TD Music Hall by @waub

My forthcoming novel Early Bird is supposed to be humorous, and I’ve always found writing humour to be very challenging. So I read as many funny stories as I could as I was developing and writing it. Whenever I start working on a new book I always curate a reading list for myself that I think will inspire me to write the story I have in mind. It’s all about broadening my understanding of making fiction and seeing up close how some people I admire do it. One of the best ways to improve as a writer is to read as much as possible, and I’m always eager to absorb and learn. by @waub

Here’s my quasi-regular post of recent reads I really enjoyed. I was on a prize jury to start the year so I was locked in to reading those books for the first few months and didn’t have time for much reading outside of that, hence the lateness of these particular recommendations. If you have any questions or thoughts about any of these, please feel free to comment below!

I think I’ll change up the format of how I make book recommendations here on Instagram so I can post them more frequently. I like @roddybottum’s Silent Book Reviews, so maybe I’ll do something like that. Until then, happy reading! by @waub
