Long Roads

Months later (more than 100 days I might add) I came back to this sequence that was patiently waiting in the FIVE12 sequencer originating from the very first piece in this project. I connected it back to the Arp 2600 and as a bookend iterated on the original idea that started it all.

Same window, different season showing the dormant, gray bleakness of the Seattle winter blending in other locations from cruising altitude in a plane, looking out at buildings while waiting for a doctor to treat me, drawing meandering lines for the sake of keeping me sane, and the long road home in it's frozen silence.

This piece is dedicated to Rudy.

A new composition with the Torso S-4. I wanted to try recording as many elements using the built in mic and then perform and record a live take of the piece. Instruments featured here are acoustic guitar, Prophet 5 and various cymbals. I used the granular, distortion and reverb effects to manipulate sounds in real-time, stretching, pitching, expanding, stopping, and starting. It has a lot of artifacts and they aren't smoothest transitions but most importantly there's a strong feeling here that echos the video. Moving, on the run, confusion, unknowns, reversal, and some resolve. Finally I ran the stereo out through a Tascam tape machine and into a TX-6 for the final capture.
Video is a blend of driving in California this fall, and Amtrak footage from New England.

Pacific XI

Headphones recommend🎧

A final contribution to the Pacific series to close out 2025. Most of these pieces have centered around images and videos in one area of the Northern California coast across several years and almost always include Rhodes piano and the Hologram Microcosm pedal. The idea of "Pacific" comes from my two favorite William Ackerman records Passage and Past Light. Both were my entry point into instrumental, ambient, new age music, and folk music. As a tribute both to Ackerman and my inception point with said music, I ran with the theme of Pacific. I grew up on the Atlantic and getting to know the Pacific represents the last 15 years or so of my life. So, this grouping of pieces feels rooted in self discovery, grief and awe.
Aside from Rhodes, the field recording are once again from my vinyl collection including some dedicated to ocean and train sounds. There's even a bird sound as it bathes near my Mom's house in Maine. The tulips videos were shot with the Fuji X100 and although a mile or so from the pacific in Washington they have vivid radiance that make me think of the sun that shines so brightly over the water. There's also a photo still with sun beams radiating down in NH, a place that is ever present even when standing at the edge of the Pacific looking West away from what I've always considered home.

This past month I've been diving into the Organelle and learning what a great instrument it is. These melodies came easily and this peice quickly came together. While mixing though I was playing my favorite Hungarian Christmas record in the other room and could hear it blending with the track and had to then incorporate it! Sometimes those happy accidents can be made into something real and quite unique as I would have never have combined something like this without the chance of sounds merging in my studio. Field recordings taken from my vinyl collection of foley sounds. Captured with the Technics 1200 MkII. Video is a combination of Northern California and Washington.

Pairing an SH101 with a quadraverb means long, expansive, warm yet metallic reflections that create an immersive sound world. Here, NH and WA skies blend into a natural ecosystem of trees, clouds, birds, and beaches.

Arp 2600 ideas always flow quick and simply. Here the spring reverb blossoms in the most gentle way and welcomes repetition as it ebbs and flows. Various samples are supporting with harmony, texture and mood. Some of them have shown up in the last album and remain favorites in different settings.
This video is another amalgam of NW and EW videos blending the skies of New Hampshire and the mountains of Washington. Processing done in Premier.

For a while my SH-101 was being modulated by its noise source all the time but just a small amount. Unable to turn it off it was enough to create a wheezy, unstable tone that still sings and plucks its way through this melodic idea born from its own sequencer. I used the Torso S-4 as an EFX processor adding space and delay in realtime while recording.
Prophet VS pads are lush and I never tire of creating chord beds with it for tracks like this.
The video contains processes I continue to iterate on. These create a lot of motion from a video that otherwise is quite slow or static. This one is about putting one foot in front of the other. Overcome the obstacle in front of you one at a time. Lately, it feels like the best approach for staying the course and not being overwhelmed or even worse, hopeless.

Headphones recommended……🌊

There's a place called Vittum Hill near my old family home where there are handfuls of Vittum gravestones. The still images in this video came from a foggy April day where the snow remained and the lichen patterns mixed with granite etchings of ancestors. It captivated my interest in my own history and inspired the first full length Intervales album The Tribe.
The sounds in 092 mostly come from more Torso S-4 experiments which was the only instrument I brought while traveling recently. I found a few objects laying around the house like an Ocarina and an old autoharp that was merely a decorative piece. Torso calls it a "sculpting" sampler and it's becoming clear how the granular, filtering and distortion modules are totally transformative…..:dream world unlocked.

Moon Waves 🌊

Some of the first experiments with the Torso S-4 are coming to fruition. In this pieces it's the foundational idea that starts out by processing an ambient pad with granular and distortion fx. Other instruments include the RE-303, System80 880 and flute samples build on top.

I've always been drawn to the sounds of the Yamaha TX81Z synthesizer. Here it's used multiple times to play the same melodic line. So, although repetitious, the sound is constantly shifting. Additions are drum machine and RE-303 for weaving in acid/electro lines.
The video echos this method. The clips from a time lapse taken at the end of my New England trip are all processed individually creating evolving textures with looping repetition.
