Located in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis, Wax World is a small but cozy DJ-centered store. Formerly known as Wizard Wax, which sold vinyl and comics, the store now has inventory mostly from their own collection and from other DJs connected to Minnesota.

Learn more about the inventory and their future plans in @taliaknight’s Q&A with Wax World owner Rosa Garcia at thecurrent.org (link in bio). 🔗🎸

DJ-U: Creating a Network of Non-Binary People of Color

Piloted in 2016 at the queer underground space Madame of the Arts, and officially started in 2018, Rosa Garcia (DJ Madre Rosa) describes DJ-U as a “reparations program” created to “repair that bridge that somewhere had gotten broken.”

DJ-U has been outlined as a “skill-sharing/support community for Black/Indigenous women, queer, femme, and non-binary people of color.” The program’s mission is “to create a network of aspiring and experienced self-identified femme, non-binary people of color that have a shared passion for music and community.”

Through the program, artists are supported and empowered by mentors while being given access to DJ equipment, instructions, and connections to local venues and institutions “to ensure success and long term impact.”

With grant funding, DJ-U has been offered as a free program. The money from the grants goes straight to the DJs who are paid for teaching classes. Garcia said she’s “trying to continue to keep the dollars flowing in our community. If I’m going to get a grant, I want to help us build money, shared power, community, space.”

“We spread $100K pretty much during our ten years with this group of people,” said Garcia, “and it is meant to continue to generate in the DJ scene and rotate through this community.” She says that DJ-U has succeeded in changing the musical landscape of the Twin Cities with its DJ economy and promoting and connecting artists of color.

In 2026, effectively their tenth year, DJ-U was impacted by the ICE's deadly Operation Metro Surge and has additionally lost its funding. However, Garcia said that “if folks would like to donate to the program, well maybe we could” have another year of programming. Donate at https://dj-u.xyz/donate/

On 36th and Lake in south Minneapolis, Garcia’s record store Wax World, was deeply impacted by the federal occupation. She was forced to close her store for three weeks.

Despite facing the hardships, Garcia still holds Open Decks, allowing for DJs to come in and DJ at her store and she still lends out and gives away equipment.

SWIPE TO MEET THE DJs --------------->

DJs Eat ICE vol 3 || The Red Sea || August 7 || 8pm - 1am || $10-20 suggested donation || 21+

This multi-genre vinyl night features some of the best in the Twin Cities, with all proceeds donated to organizations responding to ICE.

@sherbazz curates genre-spanning sets that lean into synth pop, balearic, nu-disco, and deep house, while weaving in sounds from childhood, inspired by old Bollywood films and Middle Eastern music heard at mehmoonis.

Independent journalist by day, house dj by night, @djaddmpls got started djing in the Minneapolis rave scene of the late 90s. After years playing extended sets all over NYC, D.J.A.D.D. is back to bring a blend of deep and jackin' house.

@mxcottman has been DJing since the early 90s on community radio and in community. Her mix show, VoC Radio, showcases anything deep rooted in blackness, especially afro house, hip hop, and jazz. Hear it every Tuesday at 1pm on KRSM radio in Minneapolis.

@dj_madre_rosa wears a lot of hats: curator, scene maker, community activist, @waxworldmn shop-owner and @dj_u_mpls founder. This West Bank-born cubanx dj always delivers the goods.

Slavadorean-born, LA-bred @superbrush427 has been rocking records since 96. From his early days with the hip hop group Giant Panda (Tres Récords Japan) to playing gigs, clubs, festivals and battles, Brush has spent decades mixing genres for crowds of all ages. Ever wondered what the DJ scene *really* looks like behind the decks?

Meet Rosa, aka DJ Madre: Minneapolis record shop owner, community builder, and lifelong vibe architect.
Her story? It’s equal parts hustle, heart, and hard lessons.
Saw Janet Jackson live at 4. Grew up with band
practice in the basement and radio on repeat.
Weathered everything from homelessness to the underground rave scene-now pays it forward by teaching the next wave of DJs.
Spills the real talk on gatekeeping, accountability, and why *who* is behind the decks matters as much as the music.
Shifts the focus: It’s not just about spinning tracks, but about building safe, joyful spaces where identity, passion, and community collide.
This episode pulses with the true spirit of the Twin Cities
DJ culture: gritty, creative, and fiercely inclusive.
Whether you’re a vinyl head, digital diehard, or just love the energy of the dance floor, there’s something here for you.
