On Saturday, April 4, with the tremendous help of my wife’s siblings, my children and I threw my wife a truly surprise 60th birthday party. The shock and tear of joy on her face when she found out the celebration she was attending was for her, made all the effort and cost worthwhile.
One of the many, many pics from that evening she and I loved was this first one showing all four of our children finally together at one time: (L-R) our youngest son, Wayne II, me, my bride since she was 25, Princess Anita James-Black, our second eldest son, Emmanuel, our youngest who flew in from South Korea, Princess-Izola Black, and our eldest son Keon. I was throwing around flyers for the concert throughout the musicians in my phone contacts.
Within my contacts, I came across my friend, brother, high school buddy, fellow musician and fellow Mansfielder (my hometown, Mansfield, Ohio), Evie Feagin.
I knew he lived in Alabama (about 3 hours from me). Over the past 5-7 years, we’ve talked a couple of times making the long trek to connect.
But Evie blew me away with his visit and support of our recent Easter concert!

Perhaps only northerners living in the south can appreciate this…
This is my grown daughter, Princess-Izola Black’s attempt to experience the rare and brief winter weather that comes through the south…
And she named her, “Snowria”

If I may, I’d like to post a (belated) birthday tribute honoring my pastor and spiritual father.

I was still a novice musician (keyboardist, organist), having served a few years at a couple of ministries and was a major contributor to the development of a college choir. I had a couple of years of experience as a contributor to the famed Mansfield District Easter Concert.
However, at the time, I was currently not serving a ministry. I had received several meaningful calls and offers from local and out of town ministries but felt stuck and was unsure why.
A few days later while walking home from the neighborhood grocery store, I saw Bishop Jordan’s vehicle approaching. I enthusiastically waved at him. I think I may have inadvertently waved him down.
He stopped and greeted me.
Since the thought was heavily on my mind, I told him I had several offers pending with various ministries and sheepishly asked of what opportunities I’d have if I considered his ministry.
Bishop Jordan’s response:
“Brother Wayne, in order to effectively serve, you must first be served”.
My instant interpretation:
I have little regard for your talent. I have great interest/ concern for your soul.

Knowing all musical positions were filled in his vast ministry, I expected nothing. I was not hired but joined the Greater St. John COGIC the next Sunday. I joyously served and more importantly, was “effectively” served in his ministry for the next 25, life-changing years.

I am eternally grateful to the Lord for Bishop Jordan and ministry of which he allowed me to be a part. by @wayne.black.31
