Ask NYC pastor @waynefrancis how you’re doing on friends and he won’t ask how you feel about it. He’ll ask what’s on your calendar.

“Your calendar preaches more about your values on friendship than anything else. If you don’t see any coffees in a month, or you didn’t go see ‘The Odyssey’ with somebody — maybe you’re a little bit in a relational deficit right now.”

But he’s not grading on volume. “If we only have two or three good friends in our lives, we’ve become relationally wealthy.”

And the roster is actually supposed to turn over. “Who you were friends with five years ago or seven years ago may not be what you need right now. We offboard people and we onboard people at times.”

The people he’s worried about are the ones who got burned once and never got back in the water.

“So many people in friendships could end up wearing floaties. But if you saw a 60-year-old with a floatie on in a pool, you’d think, that’s kind of odd. It might be time to learn how to swim, or at least get out of the deep end.”

Up until this project, @justinmillertv and I had only collaborated musically during a few impromptu sets at venues where he performs. This was not a Crockett and Tubbs presentation tho!

So it was incredibly special to feature an original song he wrote in my first outreach documentary….a project I created both as an homage to friends I’ve lost to suicide and as a cathartic way to share my own experience of navigating that same darkness.

The screening was wonderful, but the premiere felt even more meaningful. I got to watch a conversation that began on a summer day during my sabbatical become a reality onstage.

Thank you, J, for lending your gift to this project and helping give the story another layer of meaning. The phrase it self for your song has been language people can hang on to.

My friend @richperez and I are New Yorkers through and through. Bronx heads for sure.

When he transitioned out of pastoral ministry in the Bronx and announced that he was going to tell stories through film, I immediately knew I wanted to work with him. I just didn’t know that this would be the project I would eventually entrust to him to tell visually.

Rich, thank you for helping me bring this project to life my guy!

You brought your art to every part of it from the beautiful cinematography to your investigative style of asking questions that helped uncover the story.

I’m deeply grateful for the way you helped me produce this and for the heart you brought to telling it well.

I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to tell this story of cycling, suicide, and the famed Gimbels ride with the help of amazing collaborators and community stakeholders.

I want to publicly thank Human Development Services of Westchester, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Hudson Valley/Westchester Chapter, Community Support Services, the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health, and NAMI Westchester, Inc. for the important work you continue to do in our community.

We’re grateful to raise awareness during Suicide Prevention Month, but we know the impact of this project can live far beyond this month. The Life Church New York will be donating the proceeds from this event to support suicide prevention efforts here in Westchester. This documentary represents a new way of doing outreach.

These two men are my friends and part of my “fit family,” the crew I get to work out with at my local gym.

They’ve welcomed me into a great friendship inviting me to a HIIT workout class a few years back and now we’ve grown a friendship where we celebrate what it means to be men in our 50s, 60s, and 70s.

They’ve also shown me what it looks like to have a committed rhythm of friendship. These dudes are intentional about hanging and I’m loving our traditions of connecting at the gym, for a decades birthday dinner, outings with our wives and an annual poolside hang.

And my bud Dave has one of the funniest jokes in this clip that proves friendship can cross generations even when our slang can mean different things. Nice catch Dave 😂😂😂

When you blow your life up, you give every friend you have an off-ramp.

And for good reason.

If you made the mistake, broke the trust, or created the mess, you don’t get to be angry at people who need distance while the dust settles. Let that sink in because it’s heavy.

But you NEVER forget the people who stay.

My friend @waynefrancis could have left. Instead, he came over, sat on the back porch, and was just there. The best friends don’t always know what to say. They just know when not to leave.

I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest gift a friend can give you isn’t advice. It’s their proximity when your issues gave them permission to leave.

Wayne has written a book called Make Friends With Anyone. And I can tell you this: he doesn’t just write about friendship. He lives it.

Go buy Wayne’s book wherever books are sold. I promise you, he’s legit a great dude, great writer, and even better friend. by @waynefrancis
