Not all MRIs are created equal.

Many people don’t realize this, but not all MRI machines are the same. The strength of the magnet plays a huge role in the clarity and detail of the images doctors rely on for diagnosis.

In general, MRI strength is ranked like this:

1️⃣ 3 Tesla MRI – The strongest commonly used clinical MRI. It provides extremely high-resolution images, allowing radiologists to see very small abnormalities in the brain, spine, joints, and organs. This level of detail can be critical when evaluating subtle findings.

2️⃣ 1.5 Tesla MRI – Considered the standard hospital MRI and still widely used. It produces very good images and is appropriate for many routine studies.

3️⃣ Open MRI – Designed primarily for patient comfort, especially for people with claustrophobia, anxiety, or difficulty tolerating a traditional closed MRI. Many open MRI systems use lower magnetic field strength, which can mean less image detail, but they can be very helpful when a patient otherwise wouldn’t be able to complete an MRI at all.

At Wayne Radiology Center, we offer the 3T MRI for the highest level of imaging detail, while also providing an Open MRI option for patients who cannot tolerate a closed MRI.

Our goal is to make sure patients receive both accurate imaging and a comfortable experience whenever possible.

Some women find the pressure of the plates on their breasts to be uncomfortable or even painful. Timing your mammogram when your beeasts are not tender is important. If you do experience discomfort or pain, ask the technologist to reposition to try to make it as painless as possible. But remember that each mammogram takes a few moments and could save your life. 🎀

Q: Can pregnant women still get an MRI?

A: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Committee on Obstetric Practice makes the following recommendations regarding diagnostic imaging procedures during pregnancy and lactation:

🧲 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are not associated with risk and are the imaging techniques of choice for the pregnant patient, but they should be used prudently and only when use is expected to answer a relevant clinical question or otherwise provide medical benefit to the patient.

🧲 The use of gadolinium contrast with MRI should be limited; it may be used as a contrast agent in a pregnant woman only if it significantly improves diagnostic performance and is expected to improve fetal or maternal outcome.

🧲 Breastfeeding should not be interrupted after gadolinium administration.
