I walked around one of the most sacred mountains on Earth. Twice.

Kailash is a sacred mountain in Tibet, often called the most mystical mountain on Earth. I completed the kora, the circular pilgrimage, twice, including crossing Dolma La Pass at 5643 meters, my personal altitude record. I was also working as a tour leader, taking care of a group.

In Tibetan Buddhism, it is believed that one kora cleanses a lifetime of karma, and during the Year of the Red Horse it is said to be multiplied by 13.

The beauty of the mountains, the prayer flags, Tibetan people prostrating along the path, all of it is unforgettable. And so is the effort it takes to complete it.

The first kora was challenging mainly because of the conditions: food (I almost couldn’t eat), sleep, hygiene, toilets etc. But the walking itself felt manageable.

The second kora was completely different. After nearly a month in Tibet with poor nutrition and no real rest, I had almost no energy left. The altitude hit hard, and I felt like I had nothing left to keep going, but I did it.

Some say that after crossing Dolma La Pass, you die and are reborn. I don’t know if that is true. But it’s exactly how I felt after my second kora.

Tibetan Buddhism ☸️
Ancient monasteries, the dense smell of yak butter, monks, countless deities, all kinds of Buddhas, local people waiting patiently to pray, prostrations, mantra chanting… and compassion as the very essence of it all.
